I see a lot of people shitting on Botox and I think it may be because they don’t understand it. I’m 19 and I’ve been getting Botox for nearly a year now. I had TB, my parents almost lost me as a toddler. My entire childhood was spent in and out of hospitals. They successfully removed the tumour in my face but now I don’t smile very often in pictures. I have a ruptured nerve on the left side of my face which causes my bottom lip to move fine on one side while I have slight paralysis on the other side, while the muscle still works, causing it to stay in place while my face looks like it’s drooping. I get Botox every few months to paralyse the muscle on the other side to even out my ability to move my face. I can’t drink without a straw because my mouth can’t hold the liquid, causing it to run down my chin or out the sides of my lips. I’d rather go through that than the constant mocking I received as a child, the rumours that were spread such as “oh when Amanda was younger she put an iron on her face so now she’s deformed.” It’s disgusting, dehumanising, let’s not forget mentally and emotionally cruel. Children are cruel, yes. Adults nowadays are just as cruel, putting down something they refuse to take a minute to understand. You mock celebrities who get Botox to look good. I do too? They live in the limelight, you might say they asked for that. They don’t ask to be put down for having frown lines, crows feet or even the slightest wrinkle. Thanks to Botox, I’m finally comfortable in my skin. Yes there are downsides. But now I feel like a normal person, there’s nothing to hide. I don’t cover my mouth when I laugh any more, I talk to people and I join in on group photos. I know a lot of people will scroll past this but if you read it, I appreciate it a lot, even if you still don’t agree with Botox.
