Me: “....”
My Brain: *what sound?*

MildHearingLossProblems #11
Hearing somebody just fine one moment, but having that one second of not hearing them, so that you think they didn’t respond to you, when they actually did-- and yet you’ve heard them just fine the rest of the time. Incident this comes from: Mom and I went to the library the other day, and I asked the (male; my HL is mainly low frequency) librarian to order a book for you. Meanwhile, Mom also asked him a question, and they got into a conversation. Minutes later, I realized he had (in my point of view) never mentioned whether or not he had looked up the book I wanted and/or ordered it. So I asked if he’d found the book yet. Mom: “He already answered that.” Me: *confused* “...What? No, he didn’t!” Mom: “Yes, he did!” Me: *feeling frustrated and in denial at that particular moment* “No he didn’t!” Mom: “He did too, you just didn’t hear him.” *turns to librarian* “She has a hearing problem.” Me: ......*sigh* (I was fine with her mentioning my HL to him, btw. It’s not like I was annoyed by that or anything. But what was kinda annoying was realizing that I actually hadn’t heard him at all when he answered my question-- especially considering I heard his conversation with my mom perfectly well even though I wasn’t paying much attention, yet when I had asked him a question myself, I literally didn’t hear the answer.)
Ears: “eeeeeeeeeee” Me: *going about my daily life* Ears: *gradually getting louder* “eeeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEE” Me: “Oh, come on... really?!... can we not...” Ears: *start warping the way I’m hearing stuff just enough to notice* “EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!” Me: “Ugh. Not this again...” *mentally glares at ears* Ears: “EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!” Me: *sigh* “...right. Guess I should prepare to say ‘What?’ twice as much tomorrow, then.”

That moment when you have absolutely no idea what’s going on because the room has terrible acoustics.
P.E. class. Pep rallies. Indoor recess. Some awards ceremonies. Basically anything involving a noisy, echoing gymnasium.

That moment when the person across from you says a bunch of gibberish so you turn to your relative standing behind you and ask, “What’d he say?”
