Being unable to fully relate to the “shutting someone up by taking out my hearing aids” jokes, yet still finding the world decidedly muffled without them
Felt like saying something about my hearing loss but didn’t want to do a hearinglossproblems post
It’s really interesting when I put my hearing aids in, because as someone with mild hearing loss, it’s not like I suddenly go from “very little sound” to “whole bunch of sound,” but rather it’s like it changes the *texture* of the sound and makes it more distinct. It’s not that I couldn’t hear the sound before, it’s that I couldn’t hear it from further than twenty feet away. It’s not that the sound is new to me, it’s that it’s different from what I’m used to hearing. It’s not that the sound was muffled before, exactly, it just wasn’t *as* clear as it is with the hearing aids in.
I honestly don’t have a description for it that makes sense unless you’ve experienced it, but every time I put on my hearing aids, it feels like going from a slow lukewarm stream into a rushing, cold one. That’s the mental impression I get of it, anyway. But I’m not suddenly “hearing more sound,” it just becomes easier to differentiate it. (For instance, without my aids, I’ll still hear a lot of the nuances in music. With the hearing aids, it’s not that I’m *hearing* more of the music, it’s that I’m *perceiving* it better, and am able to make sense of the finer details)
Reblog and name the most haunting scream you’ve ever heard from a fictional character on screen, in the tags

The random tiny things that people don’t even realize are background noise
Like stretching. I swear every time I stretch it compresses my ear canal or something, which makes it so I can’t really hear very well in the middle of the stretch.
Chewing should be a given, but I’ll list it anyway, along with yawning, moving around and bumping surfaces as I do so, scratching an itch, needing a moment to refocus on a conversation after a brief burst of actual background noise, etc. They all add up to “momentary noise inside my head” which counts as background noise even if it’s not consistent or overly noisy.

Me, waking up this morning: “is the fan on or is that just me? I thought I turned it off last night.” *plugs ears* yep, just me.
MildHearingLossProblems #44
Never being sure whether the poor audio quality of any given piece of media is a result of the mixing, the headphones/speakers, or just your ears not picking up on things
MildHearingLossProblems #43
Trying to decide if that’s a cricket or just your tinnitus being weird…then discovering that it was, in fact, a cricket. (Of course, only being able to hear the cricket in one ear also contributes to the confusion, hehe)

A brief rundown of different levels of hearing loss, as seen from listening through the bathroom door
Let me know if I’m off with these descriptions at all; this is just for fun but it would be nice to be accurate if possible.
Descriptions are referring to cases in which the hearing level is roughly the same across the board; individual experiences may vary depending on configuration. That said, let’s go!
Normal Hearing:
Can hear conversations in the living room from inside a nearby bathroom, is able to waltz right on out and join in the discussion
Slight Hearing Loss:
Will likely be able to hear that people are talking in the living room from inside the bathroom, but might not be able to make out all of the conversation.
Mild:
Might hear that people are talking in the living room from the bathroom if they’re loud or distinctive enough, but definitely won’t be able to understand the conversation if so. Can converse through the bathroom door if someone is directly on the other side, but may need some things repeated.
Moderate:
Definitely can’t hear that there is a conversation in the living room at all; may or may not be able to converse through the bathroom door, but even if they can, it will be difficult and require a ton of effort and focus
Moderately severe:
Should be able to hear THAT someone is trying to talk to them through the door if they’re loud enough, but will in no way be able to hold a conversation
Severe:
Will not hear that you are talking through the bathroom door at all except, maybe, if you shout
Profound:

When people say random comments that don’t serve much purpose other than to fill space.
Like. I don’t hear well enough to want to expend energy on this, but the fact that you said something makes me think it was something I actually needed to hear, and then by the time you’ve repeated it a couple times, I realize that all you were saying was that the wind was in your face, or that the cat was being particularly demanding, or muttering to yourself about a text someone sent you, and there’s that piece of listening energy, wasted.
MildHearingLossProblems #41
The strange dichotomy of listening to someone else’s conversation for like ten minutes and understanding 99% of what they said, only to start your own conversation and only understand 75-80%
MildHearingLossProblems #40
This might be a repeat, but…
Trying to have conversations at night. At all, but especially when people are sleeping. But even if the rest of the population of the house ISN’T sleeping, people have a tendency to naturally talk more quietly when they start winding down for the night.

Not hearing the nuances in music well enough to notice when a chord is clashing in a piece of music you’re writing (my nephew’s the one who pointed it out to me; I was using major chords for something that was written in a minor key but I was honestly not hearing the chords well enough to notice it lol)
I know I followed you for the "MildHearingLossProblems" posts (having people on my dash who share those "somewhat deaf" feels just makes me feel appreciated tbh), but you've been a pleasant presence on my dash regardless of what you share (your Startrek posts have been nice to read from time to time ^^)
Just wanted to share thanks for being a nice presence for me ^^
<3 thank you! I only really post if I feel I have something worth posting about (even if it’s something silly like a recipe or fan theory) so I know I’m not super consistent but it’s really nice to see that someone likes my posts and I’m always happy to see you liked something in my activity feed :)

Being the only one who can’t hear the sound of what’s wrong with the car (though you can hear everyone talking about it just fine)
MildHearingLossProblems #37
Being able to hear well enough to tell that there’s music playing, but not quite well enough to be able to answer “yes” when your nephew asks you if you can hear it (he tends to keep his music fairly quiet when he’s playing geometry dash, especially if he’s working on making a level)
Star Trek Cooking Headcanon
Something I just thought of: despite replicators being used for many food items, up to and including the majority of meals for many people, there are still plenty of people even through the TNG era who like to cook.
(Sisko is the most obvious example, but Riker is also shown cooking, and there’s bound to be a few other examples I’m not aware/thinking of)
The thing is, while the replicators can create many ingredients for cooking, one ingredient that would be non-replicable for practical use would be yeast…and other living food cultures for certain cheese products, kombucha, fermented foods, etc. Because replicators can’t produce living matter. They can produce the dead version of that thing, but you’re not going to be able to replicate a seed and plant it. Which means that foods which require certain ingredients to actually be alive would have to have those ingredients produced and exported/imported
