Why have two books I’m reading featured women being emotionally um…vulnerable…and then having sex with men…without condoms (even if the woman is on birth control)?
Like do I just not get it? Or does that seem like the last thing you’d wanna do in an emotionally vulnerable state?
Like…girl…maybe take a moment to take stock of where your emotions are instead of doing…that?
And wear a condom!!!

Heart Smart by Emma Lee Jayne
This story was really cute. I always really enjoy reading about atypical characters. The story felt a little rushed for me as a whole tho and I think I would have liked it more if would have spent more time building their relationship. Max to me was more enjoyable than Holly. Also her relationship with her ex irritated me. I also kind of wanted to see more of the side characters.

You read it right, there is at least 1 out of 3 Filipino adults who have high or borderline cholesterol. This is from the latest survey in 2013 by the DOST-FNRI, which is very alarming and in the latest data reveals that 46.9% aged 20 and up today have borderline to high cholesterol
“The rising prevalence of high total cholesterol today is alarming. We need to make people more aware of the situation and do something about it” said Dr. Imelda Angeles-Agdeppa, Assistant Scientist from the FNRI. “Having high cholesterol levels means being subject to greater risk of heart disease and other illnesses. A switch to a healthier lifestyle is a major step in keeping these diseases at bay.”
Factors which lead to increase in cholesterol includes poor dietary choices, stress and physical activity and it all links to the top non-communicable disease such as, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease and cardiovascular diseases. Cardiovascular disease alone has 170,000 death in the country each year and making it the leading cause of mortality among Filipinos.
Restricting cholesterol levels
As a response to this major health issue on high cholesterol in the country, Del Monte launched Heart Smart 100% Pineapple Juice and Orange Juice Drink with Reducol, which is an ingredient that is clinically proven to help lower cholesterol. Studies have shown that plant sterols and stanols, the main components of Reducol, significantly lowered bad cholesterol levels among clinical trial participants. The Philippine Association of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons (PATACSI), the specialty organization of all certified thoracic and cardiovascular surgeons in the Philippines, is partnering and supporting Del Monte in this advocacy to increase awareness and help prevent the continuous rise of cholesterol in the country.
According to Mr. David Peele, President of Avoca Inc. and makers of Reducol, “based on various clinical studies conducted, Reducol has been proven to be safe and effective in lowering cholesterol levels,” In the Philippines, Del Monte Heart Smart is the only Reducol-fortified food product or drink, containing 1 g of US-FDA approved Reducol per serving. Based on the results of clinical studies, two servings of Del Monte Heart Smart per day may help reduce cholesterol levels in eight weeks.
Having a healthy lifestyle is still the key
Though Del Monte Heart Smart with Reducol reduces cholesterol levels, a healthy lifestyle remains vital to optimize benefits. “To best manage cholesterol, it is still important to have a healthy regimen which includes a healthy diet and constant exercise” said PATACSI President Dr. Michael Baccay. A diet consisting of fruits and vegetables, whole grain, fat-free and low-fat milk products, fish, legumes (beans), and lean skinless meats can help prevent spikes in cholesterol.
The 56th PATACSI Foundation Day held last July 8, 2016 in Crowne Plaza Galleria serves as the official kick off for the partnership between Del Monte Heart Smart and PATACSI in addressing and creating awareness on cholesterol management in the country.
Del Monte Heart Smart is available in all leading supermarkets and groceries nationwide at Php 26.00 SRP for 240mL cans and Php 82.00 SRP for Orange 1 Liter Resealable Tetra Pack.

Things I Learned Today: Percolate on Possible Benefits of Your Coffee Habit
An article published in the Journal of the American Heart Association suggests that your heart benefits from the jolt of caffeine provided by your coffee habit. (I first got wind of this via the Ars Technica Article. Probably a good place to go to read more if you’re not journal-inclined)
The researchers noted that the magic range is a moderate one - 3-5 cups. These cups of coffee, however, don’t balance out bad habits. Lifestyle choices that tend to be hard on the body, like heavy drinking or smoking, minimal exercise or eating copious quantities of unhealthy foods tend to outweigh the benefit. And, in prior studies or large population-based datasets, these were also the people consuming more coffee, skewing the results. When the view was limited to healthier lifestyles a significant drop in risk occurred among these patients.
Not just the heart, really. Fewer patients who didn’t smoke and who consumed between 3 and 5 cups of coffee on the regular died from cardiovascular or neurological diseases or suicide. Sounds like a pretty solid reason to keep the habit. Just one thing to stress, though. The key was moderation. Like with anything, too much and the benefits go bye-bye. So if you, like me, have a problem with moderation when it comes to coffee or get jitters, shakes or other ... unpleasant side effects, it might be best to cut your risks some other way.
Still, Cheers. It’s certainly something to percolate while picking up that pumpkin spice latte before they also go bye-bye.
Hold your horses, it’s just a salad.
I love these "all you can eat" places. The food is not super terrific, but it's alright and you can leave feeling full. One problem I would like to point out is I have trouble with the people who act like they have never had a salad before. Let's be honest a salad is a warm up to the main course. It's not on par with a turkey dinner or t-bone steak. I spotted a guy with a salad that was as large as a 4 year old. If I were to climb it I'd have had to make a base camp halfway up and finished my climb the next day. His one salad could have feed the Duggar family for days. Now I will admit this fella was a plus size. My guess food had replaced sex in his life. Heck he can't even get into his own pants. But that's not the point. I see people of all sizes with salads that are just out of whack. Here is a basic salad: Lettuce, Tomato, Hard Boiled Eggs, Cheese, Croutons and if you're daring some Bacon Bits. (Pick your own dressing.) All that in moderation of course. If it takes a roasting pan to hold your individual salad, we need to talk. I'll be gathering some people together for an intervention for you. I spotted one person who took her salad over to the dessert bar area and put Mini M&M's on her salad. That is so wrong. I will remember that for the next time I can't get my kids to eat their veggies. I've had some say to my complaints about peoples salads as "There are no rules when it comes to salads." I totally disagree. Try going to the gym and eating your salad while on the treadmill. I got a feeling they have a rule about that. I know I got yelled at there once with a Hot Dog. Society thinks of salads as healthy and not fattening. Well some people have forgotten that. I do know the next time I see someone preparing to sprinkle M&M's on a salad I'm suggesting they visit the cereal aisle and toss a bit of Special K on their salad. Call me heart smart.
