this is going to be long and bulgarian history based , i apologize about that!

katerina petrova was born in bulgaria in 1473 , the significance of the year is that during that time the country was under ottoman rule. more specifically she was born a little after the resistance against the ottoman rule begun. it’s said that her family is noble and wealthy , which makes them a highly possible supporters ( financially ) to the resistance. now , bulgaria’s religion was a christianity. but after the ottoman rule , islam was forced to the people and many were murdered because of their rebellion. so my own personal headcanon is that her family was never religious to begin with. many noble families at the time were not , because of the torture and murders of bulgarians at the time or if they were - it was hidden.

in her childhood religion was not present and it took her a long time to understand why. of course , it was because of her parents who were trying to protect her. as she grew older and the political situation started to equal to the religious one becoming horrifying , so a decision was made on her own to mind her own business and do as she’s told. there were times where she would see a neighbor , praying secretly . and other times where she would see public executions. if such cruelty was happening to her people katerina doubted that prayers would help. and that stuck with her. which doesn’t make her a non-believer , she just chooses to ignore it. as her daughter gets ripped from her arms , she sticks by it and even more as she becomes a vampire.
