Ingredients: 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour. 1 teaspoon baking powder. 1/2 teaspoon salt. 1 cup unsalted butter, softened. 1 cup granulated sugar. 1 large egg. 2 teaspoons vanilla extract. Food coloring pink, purple, green, blue, yellow. Royal icing confectioners' sugar, egg whites, food coloring.
Instructions: In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. In a separate bowl, cream together butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until the dough comes together. Divide the dough into several portions and tint each portion with a different food coloring. Wrap the tinted dough portions in plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour. Preheat the oven to 350F 175C and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Roll out each tinted dough portion to about 1/4-inch thickness on a floured surface. Use heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut out cookies and place them on the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. Prepare the royal icing by mixing confectioners' sugar and egg whites until smooth and glossy. Divide into smaller bowls and tint with various colors. Transfer the icing to piping bags and decorate the cooled cookies with conversation heart phrases and designs. Let the icing set before enjoying or gifting these adorable conversation heart cookies!
