Loki sat on the couch, Frost on the table in front of it.
Hunched over, Loki held his gaze evenly with the cat as Frost looked anywhere but at him. His hand rested gently on the cat’s back, firm enough to discourage Frost from moving but gentle enough that he would in no way harm the kitten.
“You know something.” Loki stated slowly, glaring at the cat.
Frost’s ears twitched, his tail flopping this way and that.
Loki grit his teeth, knowing precisely how stubborn cats could be. “What did she say to the spy?”
Frost’s gaze flickered back to Loki then quickly away.
“Sworn to secrecy is utter rubbage. You are my cat first and foremost.”
Frost looked away, tucking his paws up by his chest, his ears flattening.
Loki scowled. His hand moved from the cat’s back and began stroking and scritching Frost’s ears. The cat’s eyes closed slowly, head turning into the gentle ministrations.
Frost’s eyes shot open and he squinted at Loki, whiskers moving back as a soft yowl left his mouth.
“That normally works.” Loki shrugged, undeterred. He pulled his hand away.
The cat weakly batted his paw at Loki, claws sheathed, toes wrapping around Loki’s hand and tugging it back to where Loki had been petting him.
Loki smirked, “No more rubs.”
A low rumble came from Frost as he continued to glare at Loki.
“You have information that I desire. Give it to me.”
Tony walked into the room, heard the comment as he took a sip of his coffee. Deciding it was best not to know, he turned and left.
Loki glanced over at Tony, watching him go, Frost mirroring Loki’s look. The two slowly turned back to face each other, eyeing the other warily.
“You wish for me to talk to her and ask her myself?”
Frost yawned widely, teeth clacking shut as he rested his chin on his paws, staring up at Loki.
Loki rubbed his lower lip thoughtfully, glancing around the room. Unbidden, Loki’s free hand reached for Frost and began stroking his silky fur. Looking towards the ceiling, Loki weighed his options.
It was evident the cat would not divulge its secret. What sort of secret, the cat also would not share. All Loki knew was that it was about the mysterious mortal, the most recent recruitment of the Avengers, a human he had grown fond of if only for their shared love of books and that mysteriously warm heat vent. Loki thought on it.
Did it really bother him that you had a secret of sorts? Surely it depended the secret, if it was something malicious he could figure out in due time. Yet, you hardly seemed malicious towards him, often smiling shyly and laughing at his comments far more than necessary, yet just as easily telling him to stop talking so the two of you could enjoy the time spent reading in the chair together. It was peaceful around you, Loki decided, a quiet comfort that he didn’t have to constantly be entertaining lest he be forgotten.
The secret, likely not malicious, would merely gnaw at him, wondering what you could be hiding.
“You’re really not going to tell me?” Loki looked back at Frost who had rolled onto his back, paws curled up as he dozed on the table, heavy breaths coming in short snorts.
Loki chuckled at the cat’s snoring.
“Very well. I shall find out myself.”
