From Wandless – Chapter 26
I cannot focus on this story rn. I don't know what's going on lol, but every time I try to work on this, I keep writing something else.
Monday and Tuesday, I tried to second-draft Chapter 12 (the second dream sequence). Thought I'd add some foreshadowing for the next dream. But to foreshadow it, I needed to know what happens in it, right? Before I knew it, I'd written the entire next dream sequence and done absolutely nothing for Chapter 12.
Today I planned to write Chapter 21, but when I sat down I wrote something completely unrelated instead. It's good and I'll definitely add it to the story later, but like... this is not what I was trying to do today. 😅
Anyway, I'm sharing a piece of it because I usually like to post something for the holiday, and it doesn't seem like I'm getting a full chapter posted today.
Happy New Year!
"My essence. It's like—slush," I managed through chattering teeth. "The Dementor must've frozen it somehow. I can't—I can't make it move—" Severus stared at me for a long moment. Then, without a word, he unfastened his cloak and threw it at me. I caught it reflexively, the heavy fabric pooling in my arms. "No—Severus, you'll freeze—" "Put it on." "We could just make a fire, or—" "Put it on, Winters." His voice left no room for argument. I hesitated a moment longer, then swung the cloak around my shoulders. The warmth hit me immediately—residual heat from his body, trapped in the thick wool. And underneath it, something else. A scent I hadn't consciously registered before but recognized instantly: something herbal and sharp, layered over smoke and old parchment. Him. I pulled the cloak tighter, trying not to think about it, and immediately felt guilty for how much better it made me feel. "You'll freeze," I said again, though with less conviction. "Unlikely." He was watching me with an expression I couldn't read. "Walk me through it." I blinked. "Through what?" "Your temperature regulation. The technique. Explain it to me." "That took me months to master—" "Then be concise." I stared at him. He stared back, implacable, apparently unbothered by the wind that was now cutting directly through his robes. "Fine." I took a breath, trying to organize my thoughts through the fog of cold. "You start by finding your essence—the warmth at your center like I showed you before in my classroom. Then you... push it outward. Not all at once, but in a steady flow, like blood through veins. You're creating circulation, not explosion. The key is maintaining it—keeping the current going without consciously thinking about it. Eventually it should become automatic." He closed his eyes. I watched, shivering, as his expression went still and focused. For a long moment nothing happened—and then I saw it. A subtle shift in his posture, a slight relaxation in his shoulders. His breath, which had been fogging in the cold air, began to fade. He opened his eyes. "That is effective." I gaped at him. "You—that took me months." "You required acclimation." "I had masters—" "It is not the masters I was commenting on."
Were Snape and Heather attracted to each other before the bond? And also do you think they could’ve gotten together if the bond wasn’t present?
Ooh, great question. I have thought about this a lot actually.
Objectively, I don’t think they find each other unattractive, but it’s more in the way you might notice a piece of art or a flower—an aesthetic acknowledgment, not a spark. There’s no moment where either of them looks at the other and thinks oh, I want that.
Heather is recently widowed, and her entire framework for romance has been singularly focused on Gideon for so long that she wouldn’t even know how to consider someone else in that light yet. And Snape—I think his self-worth is so fundamentally low that the idea of someone being interested in him, let alone him pursuing someone, just doesn’t compute. It’s not even on his radar as a possibility. Even if it were, he’s still tethered to Lily, still carrying that grief and guilt like a permanent fixture of who he is. There’s no room in his head for someone new when he hasn’t let go of someone he lost decades ago. Could he work through it? Maybe. But he’d need someone to help him do that, and he would never let someone close enough to try.
Without the bond, I think they could have eventually reached a place of mutual respect. They’d recognize each other’s competency, maybe develop a decent collegial relationship—two sharp, proud, private people who understand what it means to carry things alone. They’re similar in a lot of ways, and I think that similarity could have built into something like friendship given enough time.
But a relationship? I really doubt it. Even if Heather had gotten to a place where she could be open to it—and I think she would have, eventually, if she ever sensed genuine interest—Snape would never have given her that signal. He would never have let her in. And she wouldn’t have pushed, because that’s not who she is either. They’re both deeply proud people who guard themselves fiercely, and Snape in particular. His entire personality is that he locks everything down and doesn’t give anyone the key until he’s literally on the edge of death.
So the bond does incredibly heavy lifting in forcing vulnerability between two people who would otherwise struggle, maybe forever, to share themselves with another person.
Short answer: friends, potentially. Together? Not without the bond doing the work neither of them ever would have done on their own.
How do you think Snape would react to Heather wishing him a happy birthday and maybe getting him a small gift or something?
I think it really depends on what stage of their relationship they're in. Early on, I think he would hate it. Later, he might tolerate it, or maybe even eventually appreciate it.
I personally feel his love language is Acts of Service. He doesn't trust words easily, so just saying "Happy Birthday" would probably make him uncomfortable. He wouldn't understand why someone would say that to him and would be looking for the hidden motivation. Same with gifts, he wouldn't just trust one. He'd probably accept something he could justify as useful, or something someone clearly put work into for him specifically, as long as he thought there was no expectation behind it.
My favorite interpretation is probably something like this (using blancmange as an example because it's currently on my brain from the other fic 😅):
The dungeons were quiet at this hour—most students still at breakfast, their noise a distant hum through the stone. Heather pushed open the door to his classroom without knocking.
Snape sat at his desk, the Daily Prophet spread before him, a cup of something dark and long-cooled beside it. He didn't look up.
She crossed the room and set the plate down on the edge of his desk, pushing it toward him with two fingers. The blancmange caught the low light—pale, trembling slightly from the movement, dusted with sugar.
He looked at it. Then at her.
"For you," she said.
His expression didn't change. "No." He pushed the plate back toward her.
She pushed it back. "It goes in the trash if it comes back to me." She let go of the plate and straightened. "If you don't want it, throw it away yourself."
His hand stayed on the rim of the plate. She watched his fingers—still, deliberate, like he was weighing something far heavier than porcelain. He didn't push it back.
"The kitchens don't make blancmange," he said.
"No," she agreed. "They don't."
He didn't respond right away.
"There is nothing special about today," he said.
"Just any other day." She smiled—small, undemanding. "Enjoy it regardless."
She turned and left without waiting for an answer, pulling the door shut behind her with a quiet click.
Behind her, the plate did not move.
Hagrid defending Snape is one of my favorite small canon details. Tried to honor that here.
