HEATHERBLOOM

HEATHERBLOOM has probably been known to a larger public than any other American show horse—but this was because of his feats of high jumping. Yet HEATHERBLOOM was a successful show hunter. 

HEATHERBLOOM was a bay-brown gelding, foaled in 1896. Mr. Howard Willets bought him from the Master of the Montreal Hunt in 1900 and exhibited him at the Garden the next fall, where, Mr. Willets informs us, he won all his classes and the championship. The famous high jumper entered the hunting classes as a middle weight; he stood 16.1½. He galloped like a thoroughbred horse and jumped out of his stride to cover width as well as height. Mr. Willets says that on the occasion when HEATHERBLOOM did 8 feet 3 inches (unofficial) at Gedney Farm, the owner measured, between the footprints of the horse's take-off and landing, 37 feet. His public record was 7 feet 10½ inches.

 HEATHERBLOOM is included in this volume because he was awarded the middle weight hunter championship at the Garden. The official records in hand give the horse's winnings in hunter and jumper classes as forty-six ribbons in the years 1901-3, of which twenty-seven were firsts.
