There's just no winning...
So, for some reason the heating pipes going to the flats upstairs are not embedded in the walls, as usual, but instead exposed.
They vibrate - loudly, and in a really annoying frequency - when our upstairs neighbours use the heating, as they're wanton to do in winter times.
Recently, the pump was apparently changed so this vibration happens less, but *only* if we turn on the heating ourselves.
It isn't actually cold enough for me to turn on the heating, and I have a bunk bed for space saving reasons, so the heat collects up top often anyways, making it too hot to sleep well.
So I know it's energy inefficient and bad for the environment, but in order to get any sleep I've kinda gone with the combination of turning on the heating to get rid of the noise, and opening the window to get rid of the heat.
Which is all nice and good, but apparently that's an easy way to get a very very dry room climate - dry enough to make my nasal mucosa dry out and make me find dried blood when I use a handkerchief, which finally made me notice (I noticed I was really thirsty at night, and that my lips kept cracking, but didn't think much of it)
We finally measured the water in the air, and it was below 30 % (recommended is 30-60% percent, apparently, below that it's bad for one's health). Used an air moisturiser and it was instantly better - until I turned on the heating again.
At this point, I'm at a loss. I can't sleep with ear plugs, because total silence creeps me out, and the vibrating sound is audible through headphones if I use them on a low enough output to be able to sleep.
The vibrating costs me sleep.
The dry-ness costs me sleep.
My flatmate called the landlord company and they said they can try to look again, but since what causes the noises in the first place seems to be the pump (somehow), and they tried changing it already, they don't expect to find anything else they can do to fix this.
I'm at a loss for what to do. I hate this. I just want to be able to sleep.
