Heaven is not above us. Above is the stars and the endless, empty space. Above is mystery and loneliness. No, heaven is below the Earth, where the roots of humanity have grown. Heaven is home.

It's just now struck me that the murder of over two billion children was presented as a normal thing for my entire childhood. 'Cause my family taught me that kids were going to die in Armageddon, and that they all had it coming. I'm just enraged that this was a doctrine that people looked at and decided "Cool. This isn't messed up or indicative of a cruel god at all. Let's teach this to our kids". THIS IS A MAIN DOCTRINE. ONE OF THE CORE BELIEFS. I know that it's useful for getting children to preach to their classmates, BUT HOLY HELL HOW DID ANYONE ELSE IN THE ORG LET THIS SLIDE. The scope of the brainwashing needed to let this happen. Jehovah's role as a child murderer was a core for my recent apostasy, (Still won't let go of the she-bear incident) But I always felt that the instances of child murder in JW doctrine were kinda niche and distant from the main thoughts. BUT TONIGHT MY BRAIN CELLS ALIGNED AND OH BOY I HAVE HAD A REVALATION. It's the whole belief system. The whole thing hinges on God going out and having children killed. I'm dizzy. It's like a second awakening.

We Were Promised So Much – Bands to Watch 2013 – Wet Nuns 

Rock ‘n’ roll is synonymous with danger but of late this reckless music genre has gone a little soft what with being able to buy Green Day’s latest albums in Tesco along with the weekly shop and of course nothing says hazardous like the Rolling Stones playing a corporate sponsored megadome for a small ransom. But what’s this, through the smoke and haze strides Sheffield duo Wet Nuns and their self proclaimed rock ‘n’ roll spin off genre “death-blues”, now that sounds fucking dangerous! But don’t take our word for it, in an interview recently the band stated “We sound like Satan wanking off a unicorn on the back of an earwig, whilst having its face eaten off by Floridian crack-head”. When was the last time Brandon Flowers tangled with the dark lord’s love weapon?!

The demonic duo have created havoc throughout most of 2012 and soaked up plaudits from Arctic Monkeys Matt Helders and Radio 1’s Huw Stephens. Guitarist/Vocalist Rob and drummer Alexis have also taken their malevolent sonic onslaught to Reading/Leeds Festival where they destroyed the BBC Introducing Stage. Ironically after doing the rounds at 2012’s festivals, the devilish twosome have announced their own event brilliantly called ‘Destestival’. The two day festival will held at Sheffield’s Queen’s Social Club on 30th/31st March and is entirely curated by Wet Nuns including a plethora of their favourite bands and special guests.

2013 is shaping up to be a busy year for Rob and Alexis, not only will they have Destestival to organise but they’ll be hitting the road in February and March in support of their forthcoming EP Broken Teeth that promises to follow on from where the guttural, filth laden blues rock of ‘Throttle’ and ‘Heavens Below’ left off.

2012 was allegedly the year of the rapture however be prepared for a biblical drenching in 2013 with Wet Nuns. Better build yourself an ark now yeah?

Track Of The Day #36 -  Wet Nuns - Heavens' Below (6th September) 

Wet Nuns are a band who do not shy away from the heavy - unlike a lot of metal nowadays they do not resort to simple sounding pop punk, so already, credit to that. Their sound is based on their roaring riffs, and their minimalist approach of only two in the band. This is probably a regular comparison, but, I think we were all surprised when The Black Keys got that sound with only two, and Wet Nuns take that a hell of a lot further. 

Heavens Below is your archetypal Wet Nuns track, heavy riffing and half audible vocals. Their sound is more than that though. They feed this need, that is half hidden, for metal and fill it with style. They're too good to be a guilty pleasure (like The Darkness) but they  fill an urge rather than a need, and their music isn't flat and disappointing like a lot of bands similar to them.
