April 2-9 2021 doodles

April 2nd - Doodles My Alarune OC at the beach and some exploration scribbles of her Dullahan friend- Dullahan needs more design exploration since they don't actually have a head/face like this.

April 3rd - Bernice is a tiefling NPC originally inspired by Valentine's Day, she'll find a way to a man's heart with her charm or with her axe.

April 5th - (Revisited this design to give her a bit more flourish.)  Lady Arete is an NPC from my #dnd campaign who is in charge of a city of tieflings and overseeing/funding all of the art they produce.

April 6th - More of my OCs, Auden the bunnyman and Revy the bird demon. Just wanted to practice more art of two characters interacting. Especially two dudes just being pals.

April 7th + 8th - felt like drawing Amaran the tree-lizard godmother and slightly updating her appearance April 9th - some more drawing/tweaking Amaran in her granny plant-lizard ways but in More Color(TM) unlike the other sketchbook pages

Hi ! I just wanted to know how is the dev of Heavenseed going ? nice art !

Thanks! After a lot of thought I decided to convert Heavenseed into a book with insert illustrations. I’m currently waiting on a volunteer editor to finish looking over the last 2 chapters + epilogue.

When it’s completed, it shall be released on itch.io for a TBD price. You will get a PDF of the book and a separate game design document which details the “bad ends” and variations that would have been in the VN version and my creator commentary about them, respectively.

There will also be a mini artbook of Heavenseed which will contain all the art I’ve done for it (some of it crustier with age than others) and my thoughts on the evolution of Heavenseed from its oldest iteration to its final form.

Heavenseed’s art roundup!

Humany Amaran- she tries to look more human but doesn’t entirely succeed.  To the right is Liam’s biological mother.

Altar exterior, I didn’t need to do a topdown but it felt helpful since I’ve got at least 2 other BGs to draw from it.  I was hoping to get to do the altar interior but /shrug.  The 4 totem-y pole... head things are some of the images of gods as described by previous Messengers- there aren’t only 4 but you start running out of room and things to carve in at one point.  (Area needs to be clear for public announcements/events, etc.)

One of what’s going to be a few forest BGs, I wanted to do this one since I wanted to decide how the little traveler shrines would look.

And lastly, Amaran’s garden AKA where her physical body fell.  There will be 2-3 minor variations of it.  Left is the one I’m more inclined to go with, the one on the right was a rough that I aborted before it became too much of a trainwreck, but the things “sticking” out of the ground should give an idea of one of the minor variations I’ll be making to the BG.

So I’m doing Deus Ex Treegod aka Heavenseed as my Yuri Game Jam project.

(I also retroactively tagged this set of dev sketches)

Basically a bunch of dev doodles/sketches to get a better feel for the characters and ironing out visual wrinkles and clothing logic.  The monster designs are a bit deceptive since most of those won’t appear, oops.

The outline and setting notes are already hammered out so I’m already writing up the actual words.  Here’s to the jam and hope other people will participate as well! 8)

A fair number of redraws/redesigns of characters from an old project.  Some overhauls are more drastic than others. (Please full view!)

From L->R on each row: 2008, 2012, 2015

1st Row (Messenger): In my opinion, a pretty significant personality overhaul despite maintaining the same plot/setting purpose and respective baggage that comes with it.  Pretty much only the basic wing elements remained. Wowzas. Also much more attractive. cough

2nd Row (Guardian): Probably the most natural progression of design, I think I conveyed the fighter base much more with this because at some point I learned about muscles.  I guess being a lady now is the biggest change.

Also lol that I guess the two swapped which direction their cloth went XP

3rd Row (Forest Spirit): Oh my god this fucking design, what was I thinking in 2008 and 2012??  Since this one was supposed to be a forest spirit, I extracted and exaggerated an unfamiliar shape from a flower. (You can see the flower in the sketches.)

Final Row is “The Walking God” and is the namesake of a project.  Honestly I just put it in this set because I want to share it but don’t have enough other art from that set to warrant its own post.

EDIT: Since I’ve decided to use this as my Yuri Game Jam premise, I’m retroactively tagging it as such. (Title is also Heavenseed)
