Hebe pimeleoides just coming into flower is today’s Father’s Day #oneadayplant. . The form ‘Quicksilver’ is quite often seen and a good cultivar. It has much smaller leaves and radiating habit. The species is fairly variable, but the selection I grow is a fairly loose growing shrub to 75cm (2.5’) tall. It associates really well with copper-coloured grasses, which can help to compensate for the looseness of form. . Lovely grey, evergreen foliage (should be ‘evergrey foliage’) set against black stems and a cute pale lilac-mauve flower in June-July. . There are around 100 different species of Hebe and many are quite different. We know a lot of them well in the UK, though only a handful are planted regularly and generally monotonously regularly to make them appear dull. There are also a couple of thousand named cultivars in a wide range leaf and flower colours and sizes. Well worth growing and ideally suited to the UK, especially coastal UK, Hebe are New Zealand’s largest Genus of plants. .
