I've done this exact map like fourteen times, in fourteen different ways, over the last few years. This is the closest I've come to being happy with it. I do want to do some more stuff with the bg to give it depth, but for now, I can run with this.

A big part of The Hedge Wizard is discovering "critters" in the explorable areas. Each of these has interactions based on something that helps them directly, or indirectly when the player accomplishes a goal in the area, such as unblocking a river or putting out an eternally burning tree. Each of them also provides rare items, some unique to them, which are in turn used for rare crafting recipes that might be involved with quest-lines or other goals.

Because of the engine and approach, I have limited frames for animation. These ones aren't quite finished, but maybe give an impression of how I want the game to feel more "alive" by having as much motion as possible, wherever it makes sense. Each critter will have a handful of animations like this so that they aren't pieces of furniture waiting for the player to interact.
