“Before you were born and before Briar Nation really became Briar Nation, the land was not as lawful nor safe as it is presently—nor were many of our kin kept in check,” Lilia explains as he continues barricading you all inside. You hurry to Malleus’ side, ignoring the ache in your feet as Grim buries his face in your arms. “In those times, there were certain sects of fae that were prone to partaking in... older habits.” 

Lilia jerks a particularly stubborn window lock before looking back to Malleus and you. “One of those habits was a hunt they would ride in. It would rip across lands that were yet to be established, and those who rode in it cared little for whoever stepped in their path—be they fae or any other species. They would snatch them up and take them off to do whatever they please. Wed them, kill them, give them to someone who requested it.”

“I have never heard of this.” Malleus sounds incredulous as his hand touches your arm while he continues to watch Lilia. The other man offers a grimace. 

“Well, it isn’t necessarily something that the denizens of our nation are proud of, especially those who may have had ancestors who rode. Regardless, the practice was outlawed the moment your family stepped into power and established order. But the sparse records that do exist speak in detail of how the hunt operated—and the way that they announced their arrival.”
