I love making characters look just like their mom. Sometimes I'll be pondering what could make their design eat more and suddenly their mom has a whole backstory that makes the resembalance as heart breaking as humanly possible.

Event: 25 Days of Christmas

Day 7: Christmas Pets

A/N: Covid works hard but I work harder. Between sleeping most of the day, I did write some. Enjoy some Licht and his cute daughter.

Heidi wasn't usually the one to disappear after bedtime. She didn't like being out in the dark. It had been a surprise when he'd looked out the window on the return to his quarters. out in the flurry of snowflakes, Heidi was sneaking into the stables, blanket shielding her from the cold.

Licht found her in an empty stall, cradling a small animal and shivering. "Heidi."

The girl jumped, thrusting the blanket over the small creature. It had taken all the courage she had to come out here. She didn't like leaving the safety of the castle, much less going as far as the stables after dark.

"What are you doing out here? "The soft meow from beneath the blanket answered his question. His daughter liked animals much better than people. He often found her talking to birds or Chipmunks in the garden when she was meant to be in her lessons.

"Some kids in town were mean to it." Her crimson eyes narrowed sadly when she thought about it. They were cruel because it was considered unlucky. The kitten's head poked out, meowing again. Her small fingers gently pet its head. "Brigitte said no pets are allowed."

Brigitte was the head caretaker for all for of the little princesses. He'd heard Heidi cry about her from time to time. She was handpicked by Sariel, so Licht could imagine how strict she must be. "How long have you had it?"

"Her name is Noelle, because it's almost Christmas. I think she likes the name."

Licht signed softly. She was attached, very attached. It would be a battle to try and part her from the kitten. But he wasn't sure he wanted to be responsible for another living thing. Heidi was already a handful. "I see."

The green eyed kitten stumbled off Heidi’s lap, scuttling over the stray bit of hay littering the stall. Solid black fur, and a little lump for a tail. It was underweight, and a few tufts of fur missing, almost as if they were purposefully cut out. But its temperament was gentle around the little girl.

“She used to hiss at me, but now she comes and sits on my lap.” Heidi watched the kitten with a soft smile.

“Heidi, would you like to keep it... her?” Licht could see how happy she was. He didn’t want an animal to care for but he also couldn’t bring himself to make her part with the kitten. Besides, he was aware that she’d keep sneaking out to the stables if denied. It was safer to have her within the castle.

Her head swiveled up, hope lighting up on her features. “Can I? I’ll take care of her. She can sleep with me, and I’ll share my food.” It was rare for the girl to get excited. Heidi was reserved most of the time. Quiet. Shy. More the sheep than the shepherd among the other girls.

He should say no. He should really say no.

But Licht was weak to her. Telling her no was near impossible. 

“Yes. But you must keep her in your room. No letting her roam the palace.”

“Noelle can be good.” Heidi patted her hand against the ground, summoning the little kitten to lumber over to her. Noelle rubbed her little head against her outstretched hand. 

Once the girl had the kitten snugly in her arms, Licht picked them both up. Heidi was humming an old tune, shivering from the cold but quite content with the turn of events. “You’ll both need a bath before bed.” She had strands of hay tangled in her silver hair. A lot of brushing would be necessary to remove it all.

“Again?” The maids had already given her one once. But, the stables were dirty, and dusty. Heidi didn’t like to be dirty. It made her skin crawl. The reality had begun to set it and she squirmed in his arms, whining. “I’m dirty.”

Why were children so emotional? Licht sighed to himself, careful not to drop her in the snow. A bath for both her and the kitten went quicker than he’d expected. Neither of them wanted to linger in the warm water. And before he could return her to her own room, Heidi had curled up on his bed with her new pet and fallen into a peaceful sleep.

In the dark of the room, Licht simply watched them for a while. Things weren’t easy with her, but... accepting her as his daughter, bringing her into the Royal Family, was a decision he couldn’t regret. She didn’t see the parts of him that were bad. It was relieving to have her around. Heidi had become his reason for living.
