The house had become Adrian's hell. The blistering winter was too harsh to take a seven-year old out in, and without the luxuries of the past it was nearly impossible to get out. He would struggle to the store, perform the Administration's duties, collect wood for carving.

Adrian's biggest regret was getting away from the rebellion. After having Joshua taken, he kept his distance from them. He decided that he owed it to Josh, but he still wondered what was going on, if they needed his help.

On this particular day, Adrian sat alone in the living room. In one hand he held a small square of wood that would soon be one of two queens for a chess board. He had started the project days before, after finishing the last pointless carving. A knock at the door caught his attention. A confused expression crossed his face. He hadn't expected anyone to stop by, but he sat the tool down and dragged his feet to the door. He opened it to see Heidi, and quickly stepped aside to let her in.
