Wait, Helevise's halv was dead?

We know Helevise pretty much never took the girls seriously, but it kinda makes me wonder what, at least from her point of view, makes one a good candidate to be a Godcaller? Obviously not just folding immediately when someone tells you to smoke your Halv, for one lol but

It's a rare job that requires a certain mindset. Helevise took one look at the girls and didn't see it. (she also wasn't in any way inspired to even try as she put all her teachings into Iralee, who eventually denied the career path, but Helevise still held hope she'd take her mantle)

God-callers are often solitary deer, most often in mind than in body, as they'll learn things and perspectives the rest of the populace lives ignorant of. They need to take their advice from the Sky and not the Ground, (test failed as they blindly obeyed Helevise instead of seeing the importance of their halves), which isolates them from their peers. The lifestyle of a god-caller isn't natural for deer who thrive in their social groups.

In short, you need to be a bit weird to be a god-caller. Or you need to have a kid who you can mold into one. I'm sure there are plenty of fake-callers who claim the title because it's a very cool title to have, or doom-callers, who preach senseless stuff to frighten the masses to act like their own moral compass dictates.

Rereading some comments, and I think War killed Helevise. Maybe the reason Gitta and Prue’s scents were there was because they were in conflict with Helevise, so it was god nonsense that left their scent there. War killed her, and left behind evidence of those who were “at war” with her.

I'm doing my usual pre-new chapter reread and I was wondering exactly WHY Antaras felt the need to kill Gitta and Prue.

Did he actually think they killed Helevise or was he just eliminating witnesses?

He didn't think they were the main culprit as he already figured the wound was made by an antler, but he connected them to the fact Helevise was killed because their scent was there.

At this point he's very dismayed that Helevise is dead and has absolutely no regard for their lives. He's not afraid of witnesses (what can they do?) but it's so easy to just kill them and get them off his mind.

This is so silly but I'm not going to answer more questions about Gitta/Prue/Helevise relationship or the halv drama! Because there's been something odd going on in my inbox about these three for over a year now, I think it's mainly one person dead set on hearing me explain this in 20 ways with alts while also trying to bait me into badmouthing them.

Ngl, still shocked by the plot twist that Antares *didn't* kill Helevise (i love it)

He really had no reason to. Antaras was letting Helevise hang around because he hoped she'd help him get trough to Eve, while Helevise wanted to hang around a god. When she died, he lost one key from his keychain.

I'm curious - on the character's description page it says Oudia, Usma, Helevise and Prue are mixes of different deer. Could you tell about their ancestry, if it's not too spoilery?

Majority of the deerkind is mixed, it's important to keep that in mind. Most deer are supermutts, offspring of mixed parents who came from mixed parents who came from mixed parents...

Oudia, Helevise and Prue are all mixes from a long line of mixes, as are most of the deer in GS.

Usma's species is written as 'mix' because back when I made that ref I wasn't 100% sure of her heritage yet. She's a northerner, and most northerners are mixes of other northerners. (Northerners are basically just thick coated deer who inhabit colder climates. Even if some distinct subspecies exist (like the two March leaders), Northerners don't really assign official terms to different kinds of Northerners like Grasslanders do (woodlander, fielder etc.))
