We were testing out a few EZ thread products in the shop and wanted to share our experience with you. EZ Thread is a rotary thread file that is meant to repair threads on anything from standard, metric, or pipe threads; male or female. They even work well for finessing a bolt you have cut for length. EZ Thread works well on different size bolts and nuts, but obviously you’re going to use the smaller tool on small bolts and the larger tool on larger bolts. The larger model fits into a die grinder and the smaller one fits nicely into a Dremel.
The EZ Thread tools are interesting to me to use because they’re diamond abrasive wheels. They are simple to use, put some oil on the threads you want to repair and let the tool do the work. This is not a tool you want to put pressure on. If you push too hard, the wheel will want to pull you around the bolt or nut. If that is happening to you, lighten up the pressure quite a bit and you’ll find that you can easily go right around the threads. If you’re going to try to work on female threads, we would suggest you practice on a couple bolts on the outside first. This will help you master the pressure, or lack of, need to correct the threads.

If you don’t have a set of dies around or do not want to drop the amount of money needed to collect all the taps and dies for all the different threads, the EZ Thread tool is a good option. In the automotive restoration field, this tool is great because it allows you to repair items that might not be reproduced. Keeping a classic all original is important, saves a lot of money and this tool can save you a lot of time messing with broken threads.
