These are not leaves you see on this tree, its branches are laden with seeds waiting for spring. When the wind picks up, they fly away to find new homes. 😊 🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️#seeds #seed #helicopterseeds #tree #branches #full #bluesky #winterday #waitingforspring #winter #wintery #icicles #snowcovered #wintersun #flora #pretty #photography #beautiful #nature #mothernature
🌳 That Tree Has Helicopters! Identifying Maple Trees in Spring
Spring is here, and so are the "helicopters"—those delightful, whirlybird seeds that spin down from certain trees. If your yard or sidewalk is covered in them, you're likely looking at a maple tree.
But not all maples are the same! Here's how to tell which one is dropping its choppers on you:
By the Seeds (Samaras):
Sugar Maple: The classic "U-shaped" helicopter. The seeds are plump and the wings form a tight, graceful curve. These are the trees that give us maple syrup!
Red Maple: The wings are more of a narrow "V" shape and are often tinged with red, especially in spring. True to their name, their flowers and leaf stems are also reddish.
Norway Maple: The wings are wide and flat, forming a straight line (like a "—" shape). These are European imports, very hardy, and their seeds spin almost horizontally.
By the Leaves:
Sugar Maple: Smooth, five-lobed leaves with rounded spaces (sinuses) between the lobes.
Red Maple: Leaves are also lobed, but the sinuses are sharper and more deeply cut. The underside is often silvery-white.
Norway Maple: Leaves are larger, with five to seven lobes and milky sap if you snap a leaf stem.
Still stumped? When the leaves are high up and the seeds are all you have, identification can be tricky. Just snap a photo of the leaf, the bark, or even those helicopters, and use a reliable plant identifier to get a definitive answer. It's like having a botanist in your pocket.

Snickers is having none of the massive quantity of #helicopterseeds falling from our trees. She sounds like the #mgmlion . (at Round Hill, Overland Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/BxGolBqHpcu/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=5g8lglfvp1z9
