Helix Editor is probably my favorite code editor I've ever used for a couple reasons

Easy to leave running on a dev server and come back to due to it being a TUI program that doesn't eat resources

Doesnt need a bunch of plugins to work well (to be fair you can't really make plugins yet but they're working on it)

Looks good by default and includes a bunch of nice themes

Language server support is available for many, many languages

Easy to write automations for due to it being keyboard focused

vim feels like star trek - "computer ! delete the next 3 words"

helix feels closer 2 doin operations urself, an potentially closer 2 ux of most other text inputs

before i fully commit to using emacs, do you know any ways of using helix as (something like) an ide?

It depends what you want from your IDE.

Helix will happily integrate with LSPs providing you add them to your config/helix/languages.toml (list of example language configs here).

Helix will do language highlighting by default (once you run hx --grammar fetch; hx --grammar build) for a whole bunch of languages no lsp or anything needed!

Helix is more VS Code than Visual Studio.

It'll show you diagnostics, error messages, and hints, but it doesn't do the more technical debugging (break-points and all that).

All in all, give it a go! Maybe you like it, maybe you don't. I'm happy to send bits from my config as examples (or to steal) via DM or write little config bits if you need them :)

Was going to complain about my editor layout being annoying on Android with 3+ panels but I realized I could just do a little rearranging

once u disable all the yapping an visual noise, having proper LSP integration as standard is nice. helix diagnostic picker my beloved

I'm really liking helix - the selection -> action semantic is pretty intuitive (and like. I started using vim that way w/ visual mode selections), its configuration is pretty simple, and it's only missing a few features imo.

what I can't figure out is LSP configuration. I wanna hav access 2 symbol renaming, code actions, reference/docs integration etc. but I'm sick of the red squigglies an constant errors popping up as I type like. lemme finish my thought pls

Opinions on the Helix editor?

I haven't tried it, simply because neovim (and later Emacs) did what I wanted already.

That said, the lack of an extension system is basically a deal-breaker imo.
