I have a headcanon that part of how Hell works in Dead Boy Detectives is that each layer inflicts on its inhabitants an insatiable longing that embodies that particular sin.
Gluttony isn't ovreindulgence, it's hunger that never lessens no matter how much they consume, a need the inhabitants are driven to eat themselves sick trying to satisfy.
Lust isn't just desire for sex, but a desperate yearning for genuine love that can't be satisfied by the anonymous mass they're thrust into. And that's why Lust is catching at Edwin - because he has what they're searching for, and suddenly he pities them for missing it
