2 dams broke near midland- presumably, they weren’t being maintained properly, and our government does jack all about that shit, but i have to admit i don’t know a ton about the actual cause of the dams breaking right now. i know at least one of them, the dam owner has been being pressured to do something about issues w the dam for years, and he didn’t, and no one made him, so i think there’s an investigation looking into that currently. i know climate change also definitely made the problem worse- we have flooding in michigan every year, there is a Lot of water here, but it’s really bad this time.
also, midland is where dow chemicals is based. i know there’s been stuff going on to try and clean the horrible horrible toxic waste mess that’s over there, and the flooding will probably carry contamination out of the site and into michigan’s water system. which would be uh. Bad.
midland and neighboring towns are evacuating, which sucks during All Of This, so they have that to worry about too. and trump is being an asshole and criticizing our governor for trying to keep our state in quarantine while we continue to be doing So Fucking Bad.
so yeah. michigan is not doing fantastic right now. however, i personally am not flooding, i live way south of midland, i’m totally fine. i just get the news for all of it
