This morning I saw the image of an atomic bomb three times in a row. And I thought, oh no. Doom, doom, doom. Once when I poured my coffee, again when I added the sugar, and a third time when I added the milk. I often casually observe my coffee for interesting images, because I’ve always been into random augury and back porch divination in the way most people are who grew up in a culture of magic and folk tales. I usually see birds, or castles, or women with swirling hair, a hurricane, a nut, a piece of fruit, a phoenix, a dragon. It can’t be good, seeing such a sign. Of course, an image could just be an image or an imagining and not at all what you think it is. Not a sign. However, the path the political climate of our country is headed in, I’m more inclined to be worried about it than dismissive. Our world climate is reaching a critical no-turning back point of warming. Government is imploding. Immigrant children are festering in cages and no one seems to be able to do anything about it. People are dying because they can’t afford the health care they need. Gunmen are blasting up schools and malls and yoga studios because they feel rejected. Racists are marching in the streets, and right up to peoples houses to intimidate them. In my own neighborhood. Women are having their rights squeezed away a state at a time, are getting jailed for indirectly causing the deaths of their unborn babies. American citizens are getting detained and threatened with deportation. Every country in the world is angry with the United States, which is a joke in itself since it’s no longer United. It’s being divided and conquered. Maybe the image in my coffee was just a double swirl, symbols of the eternal sacred spirals, the curls of rams horns, two ovaries in harmony, a happy little mushroom. But it probably wasn’t.
