Judy Garland's instantly recognizable blue/gray wool tiered dress adorned with tassels and a yellow silk blouse from the 1944 musical 𝑴𝒆𝒆𝒕 𝑴𝒆 𝑰𝒏 𝑺𝒕.𝑳𝒐𝒖𝒊𝒔 was designed by legendary costume designer Irene Sharaff. Sharaff was known for her meticulous attention to detail and use of vibrant colors, earning her fourteen Oscar nominations (with five wins) throughout her illustrious career. Unlike many other designers at the time, she spent only a few years under contract with studios, choosing instead to freelance. In 1969 Sharaff designed the costumes for the musical 𝑯𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒐 𝑫𝒐𝒍𝒍𝒚! While she created many new gowns for the production, she seems to have pulled several of her older creations for use by extras. A costume test photo shows the dress was worn in the final scene of the film, though if it appears in the final cut, it's difficult to see. Since over 20 years passed between uses of this costume, it is not impossible to imagine that it was used in several other productions in between.
