Yeah, a lot of people view 'art' as a label that is an attainable and high ranking title to achieve but don't always understand the amount of objective criticism and the sheer amount of analytical perspectives for it to be considered as such. I'm on a Game Art course and we have to critically engage with and analyse Games in order to understand their place in society. It took a while for people to get out of the 'calm down, it's just games' attitude'
First– that course sounds hella cool. Second– yeah, I could see that. I don’t know how to fix that view, especially since I’ve only limited experience with higher-level art theory. I’m in favor of making things more relatable and accessible to the public, sort of tearing down the ivory walls I suppose, and that’s part of the reasons I want to go into museums, but my background is the sciences and not art.
Thanks for the insight, I appreciate it!

i do think one thing worth noting about regular fanfic - hamilton notwithstanding, that's a whole other beast - but stuff written by non-pro fans, that's ... v explicitly Not Professional, not-for-profit stuff. so i think for MOST fanfic it's kind of. a little more ok to go "yeah this is intended for a REALLY specific audience, made by a fairly specific subset of people who are NOT pursuing greater things w/ their work" or whatever.
.. that said people who try to defend ie historical fiction on the basis of WELL ITS FICTION or ITS BASICALLY FANFIC are def missing a whole huge point wrt target audience + creator intent
I think that’s fair, but I also think that like... there’s something worth examining about fanfic, even the non-professional stuff. I mean like... people examine the past via diaries, I think it’s worth examining non-professional writing so long as it’s done in a like... civil manner and not in the “haha aren’t these people fucking weirdos” way? If that makes sense. I dunno, like I think examining it in an academic fashion is interesting, and people who want fanfic to be “legitimate writing” (whatever the hell that means) but then shy away from any sort of non-fandom people viewing it, like... I think they just don’t know what they want haha
Yeah haha I do think with historical fiction if they are using the “it’s basically fanfic” to deflect criticism are sort of doing a disservice to things. Then again I also don’t write a lot of fanfic and sort of hate fandom on a certain level, so I miiiiiight not be the best judge of this haha
