One time I was leaving a friend's place and an older lady with basically no English came up to me and communicated that she was very cold and needed a ride. She pointed to tell me where to go.

How long before we start seeing cases like these for just being queer? Do we have to get to that stage for people to start to mobilize against this loudly? Faking handwriting is easy, especially if you have time to prepare the 'confession'.
Guns are mass-produced and cannot actually be identified beyond a brand if you only have a bullet.
Facial matching via any kind of LLM or probability calculator is very unlikely to be actually viable.
Planting evidence is really fucking easy.
Fake IDs: also easy if you're a cop, because your department already arrested someone who knows where the good IDs get made.
When someone has a really important reason to think something is true ("If I found the shooter, I'l get paid enough to get out of poverty"), your brain will helpfully provide reasons to think it's true.
The above list is actually the majority of 'evidence' the cops have on Mr. Mangione, so...this ain't actually the shooter anyway. Not unless the responding PD has some new luck superpower and should be banned from Vegas.
Remember: Sir Conan Doyle had a story claiming you could turn humans into apes. Just because it looked cool in Sherlock Holmes doesn't mean handwriting or bullet analysis are actually scientifically valid.

i actually get a bit annoyed with people who get a bit annoyed when people say “sorry” in response to their bad news. “why are you apologizing you didn’t do anything :/” like okay well a) you don’t know that and actually yes i am the secret architect of all your woes and have been this whole time, way to refuse to acknowledge a woman (gender neutral)’s accomplishments. and b) we’re both fluent english speakers so you know perfectly well that “sorry” isn’t always an apology and is very commonly used as an expression of general regret or sympathy. not in this case, because i have been your secret nemesis for years, meticulously plotting your every misery, but, like, in general
Wound up talking about Soul Music to my partner recently, and I described it as a story about grief and memory; Susan is grappling with the question of whether or not her grandfather (who is Capital-D Death, as it turns out) was responsible for her parents’ deaths, and winds up being dragged into her grandfather’s work because he’s too busy trying to get blind drunk and forget about what he’s done. Because despite himself, despite the fact he swears he can give up emotion whenever he wants, he’s fucking aching in sorrow and guilt for having to do what he did, because he had to do it, because they chose to live a mortal life.
And then I paused and said, “And the main plot is that a welsh guy invents rock and roll,” and I think that’s the discworld experience summed up
