INTERVIEW: Betty Moon.
Noted songwriter, producer and rock n’ roll fashionista Betty Moon is back in the driver’s seat with the release of her new LP Hellucination.
Hellucination has Moon drawing influence from underground sounds ranging from rock, soul, electronic and electro-pop soaked with aggressive, empowering, yet somehow soothing, electrifying the listener with it’s big bold energy. Moon wrote, produced and mixed the effort, and continues to inject genuine sex appeal, soulful vocal prowess and massive production all the while experimenting with new sounds and modern genre trends.
We spoke to Betty all about Hellucination, her experiences in the music industry, dream collaborations and more. Read the full interview below.
Hi Betty! You've just released your ninth studio album Hellucination. What are the songs on the record about?
"The songs really cover a wide range of subjects, some are pretty deep, others more about living a damn good life. I do think many of the songs cover some important topics, like looking inward and personal development, but it’s really up to the listener to make that interpretation. Songs like 'Save My Soul' are written about some personal experiences in my life, and 'Get Your Gun' is about the gun issue facing our country. Not taking a side, just telling it how it is and again leaving it up to the listener to make the song her/his own."
How is Hellucination different (or similar) to your previous material? Were there any musical influences or sounds that you were able to incorporate this time around that you hadn’t in your previous releases?
"If anything I think Hellucination takes a step into Betty Moon territory that some of my longtime fans will appreciate. I’ve always been equally into rock and electronic/pop, and this album perfectly balances those sensibilities. My prior album Chrome strayed from the rock element a bit. I was delving into EDM more. But I’m super excited to inject more guitars into this album once again. I always try and do my own thing, but I do have more varied influences on this album like synthwave and house that listeners unfamiliar with my music might love."
What do you hope fans will take away from Hellucination?
"I hope the listener understands that this music is made to convey a message, and that I want my fans to have fun when listening to Betty Moon. Some of the songs may not always have positive lyrics 100% of the time, but we should have fun while taking it all in regardless."
You wrote, produced and mixed the new LP. How important to you is it to be fully in control of all parts of the creative process?
"Yes I produced it as if it were a painting or tapestry and worked the arrangements with my great team of musicians. It’s very important to me and non-negotiable at this point. Overall, I’ve had enough experiences putting my music in the hands of other labels and producers who don’t get on the level. Things usually turned out fine, but I’m picky and I like it that way."
What was your favourite part recording Hellucination?
"I know it's cliche to say, but not being rushed to get this out was helpful. Ironically the album came together very quickly, but not having any 3rd party people breathing down my neck was awesome and led to faster results. I’ve preferred working this way for a while, and because of this I write more music than ever and have been putting out albums every 1-2 years as of late. It just works better this way."
Which artists/bands are you listening to right now? Is there anyone you would love to collaborate with?
"I tend to have my staples like Lauren Hill, Depeche Mode, Queens of the Stone Age, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden etc, but it would be great to collaborate with someone who has both icon status as a writer and performer. Someone like Linda Perry, Sarah Hudson or Ryan Tedder would be a game changer."
You've been in the industry for a long time now! What struggles have you faced as an artist in the music business and how have you overcome them?
"As trends come and go it’s easy for an artist to get lost or not jump on the new train before it’s too late. I have fortunately been a fan of reading industry trades and news to try my absolute best to stay ahead of the curve. I’d say when CDs took a nosedive and streaming was first a new thing that was sort of a shock to most musicians. I think the best way to overcome them is to stay active as an artist and do music for all the right reasons."
Do you have any advice for other aspiring musicians wanting to make it in the industry?
"Do your homework, network like a madwoman, write GREAT music and be patient. Things don’t happen overnight, and what you see in the media with overnight success stories actually took many years and partners to help make happen. How one musician succeeds is not how you will, that’s almost certain. Don’t be a quitter and try not to give up. I know all of that is really hard to do but again you chose music for a reason and if you enjoy being a creative then you’re already doing it."
If there was one thing you could change about the music world today, what would it be?
"Especially in the rock and indie scene, I wish there was more collaboration and support for local musicians old and new. It often seems like most musicians act like lone wolves, when in reality it takes a village to build success. They need to support the underdog more, the little guy and support each other in whatever scene therein. Too many other tear each other down."
Finally, what's one non-musical goal of yours for 2019?
"To watch the entire Star Wars collection of movies, I actually have never seen many of them. Surprising right?"
What?! That's crazy! They definitely need watching at least once ;)
Hellucination is out now.

Hellucination – Do Ut Des (video)
I’ve never come across an Italian death metal band before and Hellucination from Rome have made me glad that I’ve done so with ‘Do Ut Does’, taken from their Multiverse album, and a quick review would read “brutally brutal”.
A much more well deserved appraisal starts with the mind boggling time changes throughout the song. A clubbing intro due to the kick drums is a taste of what’s to come as…
