bc of my undying love for Zhu Zanjin I just started my weird journey into dmbj and I HAVE SOME QUESTIONS. specifically questions regarding Eryue Hong’s (Eryuehong’s?... Er Yue Hong’s?... you know who I mean) name.
I’m not Chinese, but up until this point I THOUGHT I had some basic knowledge about Chinese honorifics and naming conventions. turns out I was wrong bc I have no idea what the fuck is going on with him.
it is said (in the newest movie) his family name is HONG and the “grave robbers chronicles” wikia I’ve found says he’s, indeed, the leader of Hong family
but later it contradicts itself by saying he’s the leader of Er family. and afaik 二 is. a little bit weird surname. it’s not a surname, am i correct?.... THEN WHAT IT IS????
and then there’s his father, who’s named just Hong-banzhu - so mr. Hong or troupe-leader Hong - meaning Hong is, indeed, their family name
SO WHAT’S WITH ER. AND WHAT’S WITH YUE??? is Eryue a given name? then why is it Eryue Hong instead of Hong Eryue? is it not a name? maybe it’s just a title?? what does it mean then? does he have an older brother, Yiyue Hong? WHY YUE THO AND WHY IS IT FIRST INSTEAD OF THE FAMILY NAME. does his father have an older brother, and therefore they are both 二?
but then!!!! his father adresses him as Hong-er!!!!! which is..... weird? shouldn’t it be [given name]-er instead of [family-name]-er???
please, someone who know’s Chinese and/or is in the fandom for more than 12 hours PLEASE tell me. I literally can’t sleep bc I can’t stop thinking what the fuck is going on.
