this actually explains a lot more behind the way ford behaved in ‘the last mabelcorn’, aside from the fact that ford was “preparing dipper for bill’s tricks”.

i really think this scene was much more than that; i think it was actually a full blown panic attack on ford’s behalf.

like described above, panic/anxiety attacks aren’t always hyperventilating and rocking back and forth. i believe that the way ford experiences them, he appears suddenly very hostile and cold yet somehow outwardly calm. but on the inside he’s a raging storm.

and this would make sense in the context of the scene, because dipper had found out something ford regretted with his entire being and never wanted dipper to know in the first place.

i don’t think ford’s original intention in this scene was to “prepare dipper for bill’s tricks” because that would’ve come out of nowhere. a panic attack is much more likely to be the actual case, and ford just told dipper he was preparing him for tricks because he didn’t want dipper to know he was having a panic attack at that moment.

additionally, this whole scene didn’t seem rehearsed on ford’s part at all; this was genuinely him but his mind was sounding the alarm and he appeared very defensive, hostile, and if you watch it again, you can tell he’s scared. scared of dipper knowing he once had a truce with bill. scared of his nephew being frightened of him after seeing that. scared of himself, even.

dipper too, was having a panic attack of his own as he automatically jumped to the conclusion that ford would call him “pine tree”. these two just experience them in different ways.

honestly i’m sure dipper wouldn’t think any less of ford if he just told him he was having an panic attack at that moment. if he told him i bet dipper would completely understand why he had a panic attack in the first place, but ford just can’t ever bring himself to ever admit something like that.
