International Turtle and Tortoise Week 2026, Day 1

It's the most shell-tastic time of the year: Happy International Turtle and Tortoise Week! This week is all about us shells! 🎉🐢

Can you imagine what our world would be like if most turtle and tortoise species were not endangered? You read that right: All seven sea turtle species and over half of all modern-day tortoise and freshwater turtle species are threatened or extinct. We turtles are one of the most imperiled vertebrate groups in the world. 😞

But don't lose hope: Together we can imagine and work together towards a turtle-y better world! Follow along as we share tips all week long! 🤗🌎ℹ️💚🐢

International Turtle and Tortoise Week, Day 2 (Day 1 here) Happy Earth Day! 🌱🌎 Today we shellebrate our beautiful home planet! This year's Earth Day theme is "Our Planet, Our Power": We all share Earth as our home, and together we have the power to keep it beautiful and green for a long time to come! 🤝 Renewable energy, recycling, and other sustainable choices add up to help make sure our planet still has plenty of delicious, CHOMP-able clover not made from yarn! 🍀🌏💚🐢

International Turtle and Tortoise Week 2024, Day 1

Happy Earth Day and happy International Turtle and Tortoise Week! 🌎 We are kicking off the best week of the year with literal tree hugging: Sometimes, you just have to hug a tree! (Or a tree root if you are like me and can't reach the trunk.) 🌳🤗🐢

With all of today's literal and figurative tree hugging, don't forget that we should all be kind to our planet more than just one day every year. Be thoughtful about reducing, reusing, and recycling every day to help our beautiful home stay beautiful! ♻️💚🌏

Happy Earth Day!  🌿  Today is a day to shellebrate the beautiful planet we call home, from the oceans to the forests to the dandelions just past our doorstep.  🌊🌳🌼  Humans, tortoises, trees—we all need a healthy planet.  So let’s follow this year’s Earth Day theme and invest in our planet:  We all need to get involved to ensure that turtles continue to STOMP and GRUMP on planet Earth!  🌎💚🐢

International Turtle and Tortoise Week, Day 4 (Days 1, 2, and 3)

Happy Earth Day!  🌱  Earth Day is a reminder that all life on our planet is connected.  We have been focusing on turtles and tortoises this week, but helping us shells also means helping our planet.  Turtles and tortoises depend on their habitats just as much as their habitats depend on them!  For example, gopher tortoise burrows also provide much needed shelter to more than 300 other species, while plants in gopher tortoise habitats depend on gopher tortoises (and other critters) to help spread their seeds.  🌟🐢

Ultimately, the best way to help turtles and tortoises is taking action to help our planet stay healthy!  Reduce, reuse, recycle, choose sustainable options, and be mindful of how your actions affect our planet:  Every change helps!  🌎♻️🐢

International Turtle and Tortoise Week, Day 5 (Days 1, 2, 3, and 4)

Closing out this year’s ITTW with a shellebration of turtle and tortoise diversity!  Like humans, turtles and tortoises come in all shapes, sizes, and colors:  Russian tortoises like me are round; pancake tortoises and softshell turtles are flat.  🟡  Galapagos tortoises are ginormous tanks and gray and brown all over; diamondback terrapins are the size of a salad plate and have white skin with beautiful black markings.  🤍🖤  Star tortoises have gorgeous radiating patterns all over their shells; spotted turtles have (you guessed it) spots all over theirs.  🕸🐆  Even the seven species of sea turtles range from the olive-gray 100-lb Kemp’s ridley to the massive, black leatherback that can weigh over 1,500 lb!  🌊

🌈 Turtles and tortoises stomp, dig, and swim with a whole rainbow of spectacular shells!  To shellebrate, I made a new glass turtle friend with a rainbow shell!  Mom found my new friend on her Great Smoky Mountains trip a few years ago, but kept her tucked away until now.  I liberated my new rainbow friend to roam free, but our rainbow of wild cousins need your help to keep roaming our planet!  Every little bit to help our environment helps keep us shells thriving for centuries to come!  🌎🐢
