How to Make Healthier Food Choices
Grains
Whole-grain breads are low in fat; they're also high in fiber and complex carbohydrates, which help you feel fuller longer and prevent overeating. Choose breads whose first ingredient says “whole” in front of the grain, for example, “whole wheat flour” or “whole white flour” enriched or other types of flour have the important fiber and nutrients removed. Choose whole grain breads for sandwiches and as additions to meals.
Avoid rich bakery foods such as donuts, sweet rolls and muffins. These foods can contain more than 50% fat calories. Snacks such as angel food cake and gingersnap cookies can satisfy your sweet tooth without adding fat to your diet.
Hot and cold cereals are usually low in fat. But instant cereals with cream may contain high-fat oils or butterfat. Granola cereals may also contain high-fat oils and extra sugars. Look for low-sugar options for both instant and granola cereals.
Avoid fried snacks such as potato chips and tortilla chips. Try the low-fat or baked versions instead.

Ugh so I thought I had posted this on Friday, apparently I suck at computers! Sorry everybody but here it is!
Last Friday, oh god. Last Friday.
So as I told you we were having friends over for a bbq and drinks, so much fun! I’ll admit I may have had a little too much to drink. For the record a bottle of red wine and three beers will leave you in a very good mood. Anyway, we were sitting in the living room, talking, having a good time when my friend says “wow, what is that smell?”. Horror. Horror is the only way to describe the way I felt, this horrible smell filled the whole apartment. Good god, is there something rotting in the fridge? Did a pipeline break? Is there a body somewhere? I mean what is going on?! So my husband, discreetly opened the front door and went in search of the smell. It didn’t take him long to find the source. The cat that we’re cat sitting for my mother had taken a dump the size of, well the cat. Not only was this monstrous cat poo in my bathroom (thankfully in the litter box) but the fur ball had the nerve to drag his butt across the floor and leave a skid mark the size (and shape) of California. Now normally I wouldn’t mind, but the night we have people over? I seriously need to work on my karma. Oh and side note; sushi is weirdly satisfying when you’re hung over.
As you can see, the cat shows no remorse
Alright so back to the health stuff. I’ve really noticed a difference in my clothes this last week, things seem to fit better, you know clothes look better, not as chunky. I’ve come up with a system for the water drinking, we have this gorgeous glass water jug that is around a liter, and a nice big wine glass so I figured that I’d be much more motivated to drink water, and it totally works! I really find it easier to remember to drink the two liters a day, I also started putting cucumbers and ice into the jug. I then like to eat the cold cucumber slices at the end of the day. I’m also a lot more motivated to eat healthy, I went and bought a peeler so now I peel my apple and slice them up, throw in a couple of grapes and I have a bitchin’ snack.
I just had to put this one too, doesn’t it look gorgeous?!
We went shopping and bought a whole bunch of gorgeous and healthy food. Sweet potatoes, salad, grapes, chicken breasts and cod oil (which is amazingly healthy). I figured beautiful and delicious food that is also healthy is the best course of action!
The leg has been annoying me more than usual, I went shopping with my friend yesterday. We went to IKEA and walked around, bought a couple of things, then we went to an electronics store to buy an internet cable for my husband, looked at a couple of dishwashers and all that, then when we finally went to the mall my foot started protesting. It just happens so suddenly that I can never estimate when I might start to get tired. And after that day I had the most annoying pain in my ankle, all night and all day today. Ugh.
The good news is that dunkin’ donuts just opened near me and I have so far stayed away from the delicious caramel iced latte and amazing cream filled donuts. Let’s see how long my self-control holds out. My husband is betting that it won’t hold out that long. What can I say? I’m a sucker for coffee and donuts.
Lots of love,
The Slug
Week four!
Weight; 139 kg.
Waist; 114 cm.
Tummy; 131,5 cm.
Alright I have officially decided to post these on Fridays. It just makes more sense to blog at the end of the week.
So this week has been all about the apartment. I mopped the floors Monday morning and I swear it changed color, now it hasn’t been that long since I mopped the floors last but with my husbands’ job things tend to get really dirty really fast (he’s working as a welder at his fathers’ company until he finishes school to become a computer manager). Then I cleaned the walls and cabinets, the dirty handprints did nothing for the home décor and then finally we got a new couch! I finally have a big and comfortable couch! Yay!
I was feeling sorry for myself on Wednesday because everybody is on their way to this amazing festival and I’m just stuck here, so I bought myself toffee tops cookies and Doritos and pigged out, but then I felt really guilty and drank a bunch of water, which of course kept me up all night peeing. So all in all Wednesday was not a good day.
On those lines, how do you remember to drink the 2 liters of water a day that you need to be healthy or whatever? AND do I count the amount of coffee I drink with the water intake or is that a separate thing? Can I die of too much water? And how Ironic would it be if I would actually die of being to healthy (now as I say this I realize this might be my fat self trying to justify staying fat and happy).
Oh a new thing is happening with my ankle, now that the swelling has more or less gone I can actually SEE the plate and about four nails! Is it not bad enough that I have a huge scar? Noooo noo lets just have these metal spare parts poking out of your leg, brings the extra “oomph” to the whole thing! Dear god.
On a positive note my mothers’ cat is finally here! They’re going on holiday to Italy and the people that they’re exchanging houses with have allergies, which means more fluffy kitty love for me! Although my husband isn’t thrilled, but I love having him. We watched criminal minds and devious maids yesterday (he, the cat, really has some interesting theories about season 3 of devious maids, really). And my mother is also going on a business trip in a couple of months to a country that has my faaaavourite store! So I really need to get going with the weight loss. I must look fabulous in all my new clothes.
And I’m really looking forward to tonight, we’re bbq-ing with our “couple” friends. Bring on the wine!
So here’s my theory, red wine, besides being delicious must be slightly healthier than sugary cocktails and beer? Right? Or with the amount that I will, no doubt, be consuming does it really matter?
I let you know how it went next week, and also how the hangover worked out when you cut out all the greasy food.. oh dear.
Lots of love,
The Slug
