today's daily is: the dog-bear! (hemicyon barbouri)
( requested by anon :] )
Day 3: Hermicyon barbouri A extinct genus of bear-like predator called hemicyonine is on the hunt for a prey.
And now, Hemicyon sansaniensis, the “dog-bear” (not to be confused with the “bear-dog,” Amphicyon) was a small early bear. H. sansaniensis was from the Mid-Miocene of Spain, and was about the size of a large dog. Unlike modern bears, they walked on their toes, likely making them active and fast runners, pursuing their prey alone or in packs.
Almost as widespread as Amphicyons, Hemicyon species lived throughout North America and Eurasia. Hemicyoninae represent a point between dogs and bears, though they are considered a species of bear.
Etruscan Bear, Ursus etruscus, the dog-bear Hemicyon sansaniensis, and small Eurotamandua, an extinct European anteater. Eurasian Pleistocene display at Sheikh Abdullah Al Salem Cultural Centre, Kuwait City, Kuwait.
