On May 12, 1998, between 5:00 pm and 6:30 pm local time, what was a peaceful demonstration against the government turned ugly and students clashed heavily with authorities. In the ensuing the chaos, four students (Elang Mulya Lesmana, Hendriawan Sie, Hafidin Royan, Hery Hartanto) were shot, three died on the scene while another died on the way to the hospital. Many others were hurt and injured.
