What's one of your favorite TDP headcanons you have?
Ooh! One of my all-time favourite headcanons is that Nyx and Hendyr are siblings or found family, either way.
I like the idea of them being alone from a young age and Hendyr having to practically raise Nyx himself (not sure what the age gap would be but he's at least a few years older). I think he would have shielded Nyx from a lot of the worst the world had to offer so that she could lead her more carefree lifestyle growing up, which reflects in his scarred face (his left cheek) while she has none.
So when his talents were acknowledged and he was chosen to join the Dragonguard, it was difficult to leave her on her own - even if she was older by this point - because they were always together. While Nyx enjoys the thrill of their vagabond life as thieves, Hendyr wants her to be able to live a more comfortable and safe life eventually, and with honour as a Dragonguard that could be way more possible than continuing down the road they are right now.
But I think it also would add to his reasoning of choosing life over honour when faced with certain death in the one scene he appears in the show.
Unlike Rayla who has a whole village to take care of her, Nyx has nobody else (except her Ambler by this point probably). Hendyr doesn't have that level of security for Nyx's future, nor has he been raised in a community that value honour over their lives. He grew up as a street rat and a thief, not a noble warrior, so in line with this headcanon it just makes sense that he made the choice he did, and I think it adds extra flavour even if his choice was still callous to his peers. We've had a lot of characters make many choices based on their family throughout the series, so it's just another case of it!
Maybe it can also serve as another reason Nyx wanted to steal Zym to take the credit for herself, as a means of potentially pardoning Hendyr. I love when things intertwine anyway lmao.
I was more active about this headcanon in 2020, so I never really expanded on it in more recent seasons, but I still love it a lot. I should draw them again sometime ;-;
Modern Au Comics!
A-Spire-ing to be Skywing
Today I'm nabbing eyedropper colors for a theory post that's gonna be so super gay, guys, but just now I noticed something interesting!
Good Goblin Hendyr here
has slightly different vambrace armor than Lain and Tiadrin do.
It's mostly the same, with a dark base sporting some pink diamond decor and a folded bit near the elbow, and a pointed wrist bit. But Lain and Tiadrin are wearing spirals of yellow beads, and Hendyr isn't.
I wonder if it's related in an angsty way to this:
Viren doesn't have his primal Sky stone anymore when he assaults the Storm Spire a second time, yet he encases Rayla in ice anyway.
In the first few frames of the scene, you can see Viren crushing something and dropping it before releasing the ice spell.
I always wondered where he got that little bit of Sky magic.
But now I'm wondering if he "salvaged" it from his last victims in the Storm Spire, because maybe it's one of the beads from Lain and Tiadrin's bead chains.
They're Moonshadow elves. They can't wield Sky magic. Unless, perhaps, the Dragon King and Queen gifted them a few strings of Sky-magic-infused jewels to use in defense of the egg of the Dragon Prince.
And then, Viren took at least one of the jewel beads and used it to trap Rayla in an Aspiro Frigis spell, just like he did with her parents. It's the circle of frost, baby.
But, angst aside, what a powerful addition to anyone's assets. Not just a single pendant like Ethari made for himself and Runaan, but a whole beaded string of Sky jewels? Wow! Such an esteemed gift seems fitting for non-Skywing elves who were found worthy of directly serving the Dragon Throne. I wonder if anyone else in all of Xadia has that much extra magic at their fingertips, primal stones aside.
That feels like something I want to poke at in Tales of Xadia, man. Questing for pretty magic power jewels? Ohoho, yes. *rubs hands eagerly*
So sorry for angering Tiadrin, I hope she didn’t destroy too much of the forest. As for another questionnn— do you remember the names of the sky wing guards you worked alongside? What were they like, and the most memorable experience with them?
The forest works around tiadrin, not the other way around. Just so you know. Anyways, I do in fact remember the names of the other guards, even though the situation in which we left off isn’t one I like to remember too often. Beside me and Tiadrin, there were four other guards who I got to know the best, as they were matched in our skill level.
One elf had shaggy red hair and a voice as deep as Ethari’s, and his name is Hendyr. His wingspan and combat skills were impressive, and I was always very impressed whenever I got to go against him. He even put up a good match against Tiadrin. Despite his final words being a little bitter, I know he is a good person, and a good dragon guard. He would be the first to volunteer in dire times and he worked hard to win extra points of approval from the dragons we guarded.
The other elf was Flayn, a stocky skywing with beautiful braids falling over her shoulder and resting atop her head. Her unique hairstyle choices often made me imagine what rayla would look like with them. Their wings were a beautiful white; unique from the other skywings I was close to on the spire. Flayn was the youngest of all of us—only 29.
Finally, there was Molly and Askar—a couple, like Tiadrin and I. They weren’t overly affectionate on the job, but I did accidentally interrupt a few soft moments. Oops. They had matching beads; specifically a soft rosey hue that was special to only them. Both of them were very in sync, and it was enthralling to watch them in combat.
My most memorable experience alongside them was the chance moments that the group and I got to share personal details and bond over our similarities. One common thread binding us all together was the fact that we’d left someone precious to us behind as we’d joined the dragon guard. Tiadrin and I had said farewell to Rayla, Runaan, and Ethari. Flayn left behind their partner, Hendyr—Nyx, who he considered his family, and Molly and Askar told us about their partner. We would talk well into the night, almost into our curfew, about how much we missed and cherished our loved ones. Although we came from different villages and cultures, we bonded over the sorrow of saying goodbye to someone you love so dearly. My ears did not deceive me when I could hear Zubeia huff thoughtfully as she listened to her guards conversing. Bonds were strengthened as we spoke. Oh, and when Hendyr finally let me touch his wings. That’s when I knew it was real.
Fareeda and Hendyr, instant stupid theory
(theory #12,787)
We know, thanks to an interview with A.Ehasz and TDP wiki, that queen Fareeda survived the assassination attempt orchestrated by Viren.
So: what if she survived because a specific skywing elf, knowing he wouldn’t be safe in Xadia after runing away from his duty, fled as far as possible from his land, to the human land, where no one would think to search for him here?
Ok, I have absolutely NO proof, but I love this idea!
