10 Questions: Henry Gaiden
Reread this ask game and decided to fill it in for Henry apropos of nothing
What is the character’s go-to drink order? (this one gets into how do they like to be publicly perceived, because there is always some level of theatricality to ordering drinks at a bar/resturant)
Growing up as he did in his aunt's house Henry was kept on a pretty strict diet and rarely allowed to drink excessive sugars, though like Cherise he was allowed to have wine with dinner from a fairly young age. Post-dreamquest he rebels and downs cokes like they're going out of business. When it comes to alcohol, he loves dark rum (which he discovers while hanging out with the bad kids of course). Naturally at a bar he'd order rum and coke.
2. What is their grooming routine? (how do they treat themselves in private)
Henry was meticulously clean before his dream quest but fell out of the habit during. Afterward he's loosened up a bit, though he still shaves every day after Ayane and Braehar made fun of his peach fuzz. He grew his hair out in the dreamlands and now keeps it tight back in a ponytail. He also starts painting his nails after hanging out with the bad kids.
3. What was their most expensive purchase/where does their disposable income go? (Gets you thinking about socio-economic class, values, and how they spend their leisure time)
Henry does not have a lot of disposable income despite coming from a rich family because his aunt doesn't give him much of an allowance. Probably in some later arc though he's gonna buy some expensive bullshit. perhaps to impress the bad kids.
4. Do they have any scars or tattoos? (good way to get into literal backstory)
Henry has lost his arm owing to the curse of his doppelganger. The area round the stump is scarred, in a sense; the curse was draining the color of out his flesh, and so the skin there is streaked with black and white veins.
Neither a scar nor a tattoo, but he does have a prosthetic; a metal arm made of quicksilver and his own bones (which had tansmuted to dreamsilver).
5. What was the last time they cried, and under what circumstances? (Good way to get some *emotional* backstory in.)
Pretty sure Henry cried in Dream Quest multiple times. At the very least, he cried when he went on his own to save Ayane after Ruby's avatar was consumed. (God this means nothing without context. Uhhh in Dream Quest he runs into the dreaming mind of his cousin Ruby who tries to help him get back home. She is absorbed by his murderous doppelganger [the one who cursed his arm] and Henry leaves his other friends to go save Ayane, another character he had been in tentative contact with, because solving her problem would allow him to become strong enough to defeat his doppelganger. this was a difficult decision and he did not make it lightly. He was also in immense pain because his fingers had just been bitten off).
6.Are they an oldest, middle, youngest or only child? (This one might be a me thing, because I LOVE writing/reading about family dynamics, but knowing what kinds of things were ‘normal’ for them growing up is important.)
Henry has no siblings. In the earliest versions of his story he had a little sister named Persephone. Henry was meaner in those, but had a big soft spot for his sister. This roll and dynamic is now taken up by his cousin Ruby, however, with whom he was raised.
7. Describe the shoes they’re wearing. (This is a big catch all, gets into money, taste, practicality, level of wear, level of repair, literally what kind of shoes they require to live their life.)
Henry has a pair of red running shoes that he wore most days for comfort in exercising, even before he stopped caring about his appearance in Dream Quest. Not that they're ugly shoes, they just don't go with his rather formal and fashionable coat. They add a splash of color to his palette and are a quiet form of rebellion. They may look like Converse but you can't run in those.
8. Describe the place where they sleep. (ie what does their safe space look like. How much (or how little) care / decoration / personal touch goes into it.)
Henry's room is very nice and lacks many personal details owing once again to his aunt's overbearing parenting techniques. His clothes are there. And his books. One of the few things she expresses control over is his media consumption, so he has a ton of fantasy novels ranging from classic to trashy. He has a fascination with them, being as he is raised by a witch from a long line of witches; seeing mortal kind's attempts at writing magic is revealing in a way, like how a funhouse mirror is revealing.
Aside from that he has a rock collection, not owing to any particular love or rocks, but to practice his magic on (he is natively an earth magus). He also has a tiny shrine dedicated to the goddess Cybele (a powerful earthly spirit) in the far corner of his room, where he can see it from his bed.
9. What is their favorite holiday? (How do they relate to their culture/outside world. Also fun is least favorite holiday.)
Halloween, though for different reasons than Neville by far. October 31 is also Henry's birthday. It's one of the rare nights he and Ruby are afforded some freedom, as Morgause does let them go out and trick-or-treat (because inversion festivals are a good way to vent the bad feelings you accumulate over the year. she told them that). Henry has no real desire to be a normal guy but he loves going out among ordinary folk and pretending to be one of them. Every year he's tempted to dress up as an average American youth but he never does it, always going for a real costume because it's more fun.
10. What objects do they always carry around with them? (What do they need for their normal, day-to-day routine? What does ‘normal’ even look like for them.)
Glasses: he needs them. Prosthetic: except that time when his aunt confiscated it for maintenance (it really did need it, to be fair). Ring of the Sylph: a second mobility device that lets him project a hand forged from air magic; he kinda hates it because it's not as good as his prosthetic. Knife: he has one that he made himself, feels naked without it. Yeah he carries it everywhere. On the bus. Wherever. Dad's Belt: Henry's father had a prized belt with a silver and turquoise buckle. His aunt gave it to him as a gift on the day of his quest.
All together now!
