Henry Big Boy All Weather .44 Magnum
Lever guns have been in my family longer than I’ve been on this earth. My father was a huge fan of lever rifles and especially Marlin lever guns. The lever guns were always utilitarian in nature. Whether used to hunt, plink or defense…the lever gun fit the need almost perfectly in each scenario. Growing up, I remember the different lever guns my father owned. He had a .22 magnum Marlin, an 1894 saddle ring Marlin in .44 magnum, a Winchester .30-30 and also a Marlin 39A Mountie. We plinked and hunted small game with the rimfire variety and hunted with the big cartridges like the .44 magnum and .30-30. After my dad passed away in 2017, I inherited the Marlin .44 Magnum and the Marlin 39A. For many years I’ve had the draw to pick up another lever action rifle. I truly wanted a foundation or a blank canvas for a modern, let’s say tactical lever gun variety. Of course Henry has their X Model which already comes well equipped, but I much prefer to make changes myself…to make it my own.
So after a couple of years of back and forth on which rifle to get, I was leaning towards a Big Boy model. Caliber I also wasn’t as sure. I knew that I preferred something other than .45 Long Colt and .30-30, so that left .44magnum and .357Magnum. Recently Brownells got a Henry All-Weather .44 Magnum Big Boy in stock. Even though the barrel is longer than I wanted at 20 inches, this would work perfectly for my intentions. I sat on it for a few days and was shocked when I saw it was still in stock. In the past I’ve noticed the all-weather models sell out relatively fast so I went ahead and purchased it. A few days later it showed up at my FFL. Henry rifles come in a basic cardboard box, nothing fancy. The All-Weather variety has a chromed finish to resist corrosion. They look absolutely gorgeous! The wood furniture they come with is black with wood grain, but a very smooth finish. Truly looks like fine furniture and well worth the cost.
Plans for this Henry All-Weather Big Boy lever gun? Tactical lever guns have been gaining quite a bit of popularity over the years and for good reason. Just ask one of my favorite lever gun experts, Pat RMG. I’ve shot a couple of his tactical lever guns last year at an event and was pretty much determined to have one of my own, but just not sure which until the Henry Big Boy All Weather in .44 magnum. My ultimate goal is to thread the barrel for suppressor use, change out the hand guard for a railed hand guard for accessories. I’m undecided on which optic to use, but I’m leaning towards the Brownells MPO 1-6 Donut optic. Really excited at learning this new lever action rifle from Henry. I even decided to go ahead and purchase the needed components to start reloading .44 magnum/.44 Special cartridges. So be on the look out…I hope to start installing the necessary tactical upgrades shortly.
