GERALT OF RIVIA in THE WITCHER SEASON 01
for @vortexoffate
I get people saying Henry Cavil is overrated--as the latest round on the internet Wheel O' Contrarianism goes--but my counter to that is: so what? It's like saying Arnold Schwarzenegger isn't the best actor. That's only an issue if he's doing Shakespeare.
What Schwarzenegger, Cavil, and a lot of other actors are doing is, well, summer theater. They show up in blockbusters, they look good, emote to the extent required, and get audiences to like them. That's all they have to do. It doesn't matter if Schwarzenegger isn't the best actor in the world. Audiences like him and want to see him fight the Predator.
The problem with Cavil is he keeps getting stuck in dumpster fire franchises that blunt his charisma. And Man From Uncle, which used his charisma right, but gave him a co-star who turned out to be a cannibal, so that didn't work out.
(Guy Ritchie, just do a sequel and team him up with Jason Statham. No one will question it, I promise you. You can make Statham Russian, we'll all pretend he's got the accent right, we did it for Sean Connery!)
I actually think he'd be a good fit for Bond, where he'd just have to show up, be charming, and have a good time entertaining everybody. If you think Roger Moore did more than that, you're dreaming.
Come to think of it, Idris Elba has an ironically similar problem, where everyone likes him some and he's popular enough to keep getting cast in major franchises, but it's usually in small roles (Bloodsport, anyone?) or as the villain who gets killed off after one go-around. Even now, his next role is as Man-At-Arms in a He-Man movie (no, really). Star vehicles for him, through no fault of his own, tend to go awry (anyone remember The Dark Tower?).
Well, at least neither of them have been sucked into doing a Tron.
Warhammer TV show timeline theory:
So for the Warhammer TV show that's in the works they've basically only announced that it Is Happening, but the exact start point is being kept secret for now. There are S O many incredible stories they could tell, but I feel like I Have to assume that a Warhammer show w Henry Cavil officially cast as a lead is going to focus on the space marines. That just feels like a given to me. I think the question is then: what's the starting point?
Personally I doubt they will start in "present" post-heresy Warhammer. This is going to be a massive promo opportunity for James Workshop, so I would be really surprised if they only focus on existing fans who can name all the primarchs and are already familiar with the corpse on the throne (praise be his name). There is an Ocean of lore to cover. It would be almost impossible to orient newcomers without either glossing over the lore, spending a shit ton of time on exposition, or completely omitting any background explanation entirely and committing to a "monster of the week" style TV show and drip-feeding lore in over time. While I feel a monster of the week structure would work Beautifully for a Warhammer show, this is less me thinking about what I Want and more a thought exercise of me trying to guess what they are Actually Going To Do. (I don't think this is likely, but I think it would be cool to do an inverted plot-progression structure of what supernatural/ the x-files did. Start out with a super convoluted plot and a shit ton of characters and eventually turn the show into a monster of the week structure over time. A show getting LESS complicated, MORE focused on beloved characters, AND more light as time goes on??? A girl can dream.)
Assuming they aren't going to start at present day, they'll have to start further back so the questions is how far back? Like I said, this is all based on the assumption that the tv show WILL be focused on space marines. By the time hominids even exist in Warhammer lore there is millions of years of necron and aeldari history. I would expect all of this to be either glossed over or more likely held back and revealed in parts over the course of the development of the plotline. I also assume that they will not cast Henry Cavil as the emperor of mankind as I cannot see them putting him in a living role they will eventually have to turn into a prop. I think the unification wars of Terra are probably too far back as I would assume Cavil will be in the very first episode, or at least of child version of his character.
The ultimate conclusion that I come to is this:
Cavil will be cast as one of the Primarchs or a Space Marine in one of the legions Pre-Horus heresy and Post discovery of the final primarch. I would guess it would be right around when Horus is named Warmaster, as that would be a good place of rising action to start the narrative.
Past that, I think it's anyone's guess! And I could be wrong about literally everything I said! 🤣 I'd assume they would pick a legion with fleshed out characters and a backstory, but it would also be cool for them to focus on a lesser known legion and expand the lore! It will be VERY interesting to see if they choose to focus on one of the legions that falls to chaos.
Personally, I would love to see Cavil cast as a son of Horus. I think a progression of his character going from being loyal to the emperor's favorite primarch, then watching his primarch fall to chaos, maintaining his loyalty to the emperor through all of it, and still ending up being hunted for sport across time and space would work really well. Plus the plot line could reflect a deteriorating faith in the Imperium of Man along with the deterioration of the Imperium of Man itself.
And that's what you missed on Glee 💋✨
I'm making something, here's the first character announcement.

No one could play Emerson. He'd have to be a three-way split between Billie Brown, Henry Cavil, and Terry-Thomas.
