Henry Gibson was an American actor who is best known for his work in The Blues Brothers (1980) and The Burbs (1989). He also appeared in The Nutty Professor (1963), Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968), Charlotte’s Web (1973, Wilbur), Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990), Tom and Jerry: The Movie (1992), Wedding Crashers (2005), Bewitched (1968-1970), Wonder Woman (1975-1978), and Charmed (2002).
Henry Gibson (James Bateman) was born in Germantown, Philadelphia, US, and was one of seven children. He is of English, Irish, German and Dutch ancestry. At school he was president of the drama club. He went on to serve as an intelligence officer in the US Air Force in France from 1957 to 1960. He started acting from the age of 8, performing in the theatre. Jerry Lewis admired Gibson’s talent and cast him in The Nutty Professor which launched his career. He went on to appear on The Beverly Hillbillies and then My Favorite Martian. Gibson was married and had three children.
Gibson died of cancer in 2009, a week before he turned 74.
