The Surrogate Chapter 14 Her Tears
She stayed in her room until she had to come out for dinner. Jamie wouldn’t meet her eye and Geneva is to self involved to notice anything amiss. A blessing.
“So, we need to get on the law makers there so Fraser Spirits can be sold in the States. Steven says we have some good contacts there.”
“Aye, we do. I will see that it is done.”
“Very good James, as we want our child to inherit a thriving company.”
“As I said, I will see to it.” His voice verges on hostile and Claire lowers her eyes. She is so staying out of this.
“I heard you. It is just with the time you have been taken with Miss Beauchamp and all her needs..”
“You bloody wanted this Geneva. You wanted a surrogate, you wanted her here throughout the pregnancy. You! But you can’t handle the natural consequences. The sickness, the aversions, the bloody need for Claire to get to classes! Yet, you get on me for not doing my job! I am doing yours, mine, and seeing to the welfare of the lass that carries my child!”
Of course the end is all she heard. “Your child! It is our child James.”
“Jamie, my blasted name is Jamie. “ he had lowered his voice after seeing Claire’s reaction. She can tell he longs to storm off but won’t leave her alone with Geneva. So she pushes the plate away.
“If you will excuse me.” Geneva glares at her and Jamie nods as he stands. She hurries upstairs just as their voices raise again.
The next morning she comes down with hesitation. She has no idea what she will be walking into.
Jamie leans against the counter while his wife sits stiffly at the table. “Good morning Claire. I made you a big breakfast. Thought you might be hungry after…” he leaves the rest unspoken.
“Yes, thank you.” She takes a seat across from Geneva. “Good morning, Mrs. Fraser.”
“Good morning.” She stands, scrapping the chair across the floor. “I will be off as I need to stop for coffee. Was almost late yesterday. That will never do as James is.” She directs towards Jamie, before tossing her head, gathering her purse, and walking out.
It is all Claire can take. Between the hormones and the tension, she burst into tears. Jamie hurries over to her just as Geneva walks back in.
“Forgot my briefcase. What is this?”
“You and your snide comments made her cry!” he is fully enraged. “So grab your briefcase and go. Unless you actually wish to stay and comfort her.”
“No. You have it.” She takes her briefcase and hurries out.
“Christ!” an oath and prayer. He drops down beside her. “So sorry Claire. You needn’t stay. I know she is.. if you want to leave, I will fully support you.”
“I don’t want to leave you.” She confesses.
“Oh.” His hands come up to frame her face. “God. Lord lass. This is so bloody wrong.” Tears still drip down her face, covering his hands.
“Yes.” She moves closer and so does he. She is soon right by his bent knees. “I know. But please.”
“Claire, I must kiss you. May I?”
“Yes please.”
