It's teasel harvesting season!
One of my favorite times of the year.
Dipsacus fullonum, or wild teasel, is one of my favorite plants to use in witchcraft. It’s a versatile plant, and a substitute for those that you may not have in your area. At this time of year, they are dried out completely, and are super easy to harvest and use in bundles and bundles! You can usually find these little pricklies in the ditches of highways, roads, and country drives.
The thing about teasel, though, is that once it’s dried, the seeds start falling quickly -- and in great numbers. If you don’t want the seeds flying everywhere, I’d suggest shaking them out a few times before hanging them anywhere. Saving the seeds for later is always a good idea -- they’ll bear much the same meaning as the plant itself, minus the spikes.
Notes on harvesting: Teasel is a weed, and extremely invasive, so watch out where you might drop seeds. Always wear gloves when harvesting -- you never know what you’re allergic to until you have a reaction to it. And plus, they’re pretty darn spiky.
Some of my uses for teasel:
protection (spiky! The flowers are also purple -- though if you harvest them this time of year, there aren't many flowers left)
broom making (they aren't good for “real” (practical)brooms, per se. You would use a teasel broom for sweeping an area symbolically)
symbolic floggers (if you use those)
negativity catchers (think of the spikes catching and ensnaring any negativity)
hexes and curses, if you use them
inserting your influence somewhere, persuasion, planting an idea or habit (due to their invasive nature)
I personally love to hang these above my threshold, on top of a protection sigil.
Happy harvesting!
