I am grateful to live in such a beautiful part of the world...last night on our walk I kept smelling the most amazing hay like , patchouli laced scent. It was glorious. I kept thinking that I was back in the 60’s wearing my favorite solid hippy chick perfume...does any one remember the Coty Sweet Earth solid perfume compacts? Well I couldn’t figure out what I was smelling until I got around to the front of the lake. It was an enormous patch of Yellow Sweet Clover, a beautiful biennial that is used for forage, cover cropping, conservation, and honey making and of course bouquets... I walked over to admire it and found that it was covered with honeybees, always a good sign. I thanked them for taking me on such a delightful trip down memory lane and went home to enjoy a most delightful and psychedelic sleep. I’m obsessed with kitchen gardens...I love to plant them and harvest them and simply watch them grow. I love to help others create them as well.. it gives me so much pleasure to watch garden dreams come to life. In my world, all is well as long as the chard is growing and the tomatoes are ripening. Not much gives me as much pleasure as creating a dinner I’ve grown myself. I’m on a personal quest to help everyone I know turn any little patch of grass into a self sustaining food garden, because who needs a lawn anyhow! ? This little book from England showed up on my front porch this morning and is a basic history of walled gardens. I think that we have so much to learn from the practices of the past. “ Growing vegetables slowly and gently and in full accord with nature.” That’s what is says on the wonderful bag that I got today at @the_chefs_garden_ohio . What a joy their farmstand is... with @farmerleejones standing right there talking to and welcoming his customers and fans. I could have stayed for quite some time just drinking in the joy of this place. Farmer Lee is as sweet , open , welcoming and kind as I hoped he’d be. We bought sweet June berries, little potatoes, fresh peas and beans and of course a copy of his wonderful new cookbook that I’ve been jonesing for since it came out. Farmer Lee and his co-writer will probably win incredible awards for this beautiful book... it’s a @beardfoundation award winner if I’ve ever seen one! Yet the earnestness of the man and his farm is palpable. He wants you to love it as he does and he’s really really glad you’re there. This is one of about 6 glorious patches of lavender that came back this year. I plant it among my vegetables to attract the pollinators. 6 years ago it would not have survived let alone thrived over wintered ... climate change is definitely at work here. I also had Rosemary survive... in my garden, almost unheard of. The other night my son cooked us this wonderful light meal! I just love #sheetpandinners don’t you? This was so delicious and healthy... kale, asparagus, tomatoes and fennel infused chicken sausage meatballs, seasoned perfectly and drizzled with lemon, garlic and olive oil. The lemony olives were a perfect accompaniment, as was the yummy garlic sourdough bread that we used to sop up the juices.
