Elder flower harvests are one of my favorites. To some the smell is odd and strange, but to me it is the characteristic musky scent of late spring. . Not all flowers smell sweet and not all acts of resilience look the same. Elder can be found growing along waterways, under the forest canopy, or on dangerously steep slopes. The long leggy branches reaching towards the sun seem to sprout off nearly dead trunks. Yet this perceived fragility is one of their great strengths, as new life can form from their hollow, easy to break branches if only just placed within the ground. . Elder carries strong medicine throughout the seasons, in the form of leaves, flowers, bark and berries. And with the gentle reminder to lean in to the hard to reach places, ground ourselves, and allow the time and space for continued growth. . Using the budding profiles, and bark characteristics is my preferred way of really knowing who I'm interacting with. . The bark on this golden birch is super distinguishable, but the real gem is the smell. With a scratch to a branch or sapling this tree exudes the fragrance of its main constituent, the oil of wintergreen. It makes my mouth water for homemade birch beer, the northern version of root beer. . Also the bark itself is used medicinally, as a Blood cleanser because of its emetic and cathartic properties. It is a beautiful diuretic for its fiercly compassionate ability to move liquids in the body without being aggressive or irritating to the kidneys and other organs. .
