I wanna keep track of the books I read this year.
Herbana Witch: A Year in the Forest (Working with Herbs, Barks, Mushrooms, Roots, and Flowers) by Cecilia Lattari (2023)
While looking for inspo for my own herbiary, I was instantly enamored by the cover of this book. A fox on the cover? It was meant to be. And every page is just as beautiful. I like how Cecilia grouped and ordered the subject matter (and really liked that it starts with Winter since that's when I am currently). It's also an easy read.
Unfortunately, it felt like it was lacking in a lot of ways. It felt like Cecilia had a Pintrest board of "here's the perfect herbana witch" then put those vibes on paper. Every herbana witch keeps specific tools on her, talks with wolves, and has access to the same plants. I wish the author had given a caveat of "these are the species that represent [season] in my ecosystem, you might have different friends".
To Cecilia's credit, there is a list of sources in the back, but it feels like too little too late. The author makes so many generalizations about how people interact with their environments that just don't represent some cultures, which is why it might have been helpful to be less "This is how things are" and more "this is my experience that I'd like to share".
Anyway, pretty book with fun activity ideas and great structuring, but not one I'd hand to someone without a boulder of salt.
