Our world is obsessed with heroes. we dream of larger than life figures than can do anything, that can accomplish what we cannot, and that can finally save us. Today we have superheroes, we worship the spidermans and ironmans, just like the ancient greeks worshiped Hercules and Perseus.
In the bible there are no heroes, not in that sense. In fact, there isn't even a word for hero in hebrew. That is because this idea of Hero give us a false perception of what a hero should be. Heroes have superpowers and are born from the gods. They are able to accomplish the extraordinary because they are nothing like us. In the face of those heroes that save the world, what we can do with our simple humanity?
That is why the heroes of the Bible are people like Moses, David, Abraham or Esther. There are just simple people who came from simple origins, with no superpowers just their desire to make a difference. Being a hero means making a difference on a daily basis through every action in our lives, even the simplest, most mundane tasks.
Hebrew seal bearing the name 'Matanyahu' uncovered in Jerusalem
The remains of a building dating to the end of the First Temple period were discovered below the base of the ancient drainage channel that is currently being exposed in Israel Antiquities Authority excavations beneath Robinson’s Arch in the Jerusalem Archaeological Garden, adjacent to the Western Wall of the Temple Mount. This building is the closest structure to the First Temple found to date in archaeological excavations.
In the excavations, underwritten by the Ir David Foundation, a personal Hebrew seal from the end of the First Temple period was discovered on the floor of the ancient building. The seal is made of a semi-precious stone and is engraved with the name of its owner: "Lematanyahu Ben Ho…" ("למתניהו בן הו..." meaning: "Belonging to Matanyahu Ben Ho…"). The rest of the inscription is erased. Read more.
