Hi guys, so a while ago I made this post about some lifestyle tips that I learned during my first year of uni and since I am 4 days away from starting my second year I thought I might as well share with you the second part of my post.
Organization systems. Having one saved my life during my first year. Being able to see deadlines and to-do’s made it easier to stop procrastinating and actually focus on my classes. There are so many organization systems out there honestly. What has worked best for me is the bullet journal but you can find what suits you best.
When to skip class and when not to. Let’s be honest, there are classes that you should never never skip but there are also classes that won’t be such a problem if you skip them once or twice. Just notice that every teacher works differently and there will be classes that are not as important. If you do skip a class make sure you use your time in something important like studying or relaxing, also don’t make it a frequent thing because then you will be in trouble.
Participating in class saves lives. Pretty much self explanatory tip. I am super shy and I never participated in class back in high school but I actually started doing it at uni because it is so helpful. First of all, teachers will actually remember and notice you in their classes, you get to make a good impression because, even if your participation is not as smart, they will appreciate the effort. Second of all, it could help you learn actually! Some people, like me, tend to remember things when they say them out loud and talk about it.
Taking notes. Similar to the organization systems thing. There is a million ways to take notes but once you find the one that suits you best it is an amazing tool to learn.
Teachers are friends (not food). I remember being SO SCARED of my teachers during my first weeks of uni but I quickly noticed that they are actually great people and, if you leave a good impression, they are more than willing to help you whenever you need it. Mail them if you need extra help and I am pretty sure most of them will be up fot ir and will value your interest on their class.
Grades can be unfair (and therefore questioned). Like I said, teachers are people and people can make mistakes. Just because they are uni-level teachers doesn’t mean they are always right. If you feel like you put on a lot of effort on an essay/homework/project and you were graded uunfairly then don’t fear talking to your teachers and asking the reasons for your grade. They might reconsider your grade or at least they will give you a guide so you can do better on future works. Even if your grade is not changed your teachers will remember what you did and have it as a future reference and, once again, interest is SO VALUED by uni teachers. Doing this actually helped me move from a 10/15 to a solid 15/15 during my second semester...turns out my teacher just wanted me to write longer essays lol.
Everyone learns differently. I have seen a lot of posts saying how study groups are the best way to learn but it is not that way for me, I just can’t stand studying in group and I am pretty sure I am not the only one who feels this way. Don’t be scared if you feel like you are learning enough with a method, just go search for new methods that suit you!
Planning is amazing. I don’t mean only like having an organization system, I mean planning everything. It is what has worked for me, before I do any project, essay or just any homework I HAVE to plan and structure everything I am going to write. Also, I have to plan personal deadlines for long term projects so I don’t procrastine and actually get things done.
Also post its are great. If you are all about writing down everything you have to do and then forget looking at your planner: post its are here to save you. Whenever I am extremely busy I write my to-do’s on a post it and put it on a place I KNOW I will see, like the back of my phone. It never fails.
Have fun learnign! Ok yes, studying is your responsibility and you probably have to grades to keep up but you should be happy while doing so! Sign into classes you know you will enjoy and, if you have bad luck and end up hating the class/teacher, don’t worry, prove that you can be excellent at it and be happy
