Why people wished they stayed platonic:

Rayla and Callum

Their romance felt forced and bland. Like the writers went "our main characters are a boy and a girl? Obviously they should get together." After their relationship got romantic, it got annoyingly sappy and it made the show and both their parents worse.

They’re just an absolute mess of miscommunication and the entire plot has to be put on hold like every three episodes to deal with their bullshit

Their friendship was so interesting narratively and groundbreaking for their species since elves and humans have been enemies for years, but it all got so flattened when they became romantic. The show knows its bad too, I think, because it did this whole break-up and re-getting-together arc. Could have been avoided if they just kept it in their pants.

While I did not loathe them as a romantic couple in season 2, there was something magical about seeing a man worship an older woman and an older woman trust a younger man and move around one another so flawlessly and have it be entirely platonic. A sort of platonic soul mate. I don't want you carnally, I want you emotionally because you understand me in a way no one else ever has. Its not about sex, its about trust and dedication to the shared goals we have.

I'm sure a lot of people loved them as a couple and while I did not hate the writing where they were one I will always mourn how satisfying it was to see a man and woman get each other so intimiately without it being about sexual attracted.
