// THE HORNED, ritual mask recto verso. This one is a part of a series of four included in my next solo show. Each one is linked to a season and a part of the life cycle. This one is winter / death and rebirth. It’s an echo of Germanic folklore in which I grew up as an Alsacian. . . . . #falseface #mask #ritualmask #fastnacht #carnaval #charivari #winter #cerf #cernunnos #lecornu #hornedgod #stag #herne #hernethehunter #mementomori #naifnoir #folkart #minamond #neofolk #outsiderfolk #outsiderart https://www.instagram.com/p/CJH3h0bA7A2/?igshid=hi0pp1qwmiwq
Inktober N° 15 — Herne the Hunter. In English folklore Herne the Hunter was the ghost of a forest hunter who had hanged himself on Herne’s oak. Spirits, however, are often euhemerized into ghosts of human people, and many people think that Herne the Hunter, with the stags’ horns on his head, was a woodland spirit or a demon of the oak. 🌳 #fawnlorn #matthayton #illustration #inktober #inktober2019 #folklore #hernethehunter https://www.instagram.com/p/B3pKCqbnOQg/?igshid=98nfzjv1lwwm
So I’ve actually had this idea for a while, this here good boy is Herne, or the guardian of change. Yeah that’s about it. He deals with the change of seasons, ideas, you name it, when you forget to do something, that’s him changing your mind. He was inspired by the legend of Herne the hunter in English mythos.
His story is that Herne was hunting in the woods one day and killed a deer. Herne was a bout to pull out the arrow when the deer and the arrow begins to decay and rot. The forest begins to rot and die as well. The deer was the spirit of the forest and so because Herne screwed up majorly, he became the new spirit of the forest. Also antlers

Inktober N° 9 — Herne the Hunter. One story tells of three young men who were up to mischief in the forest and started breaking down the young trees. One lad found an old hunters horn and ignoring the protests of the other two lads who told him to “leave it lay and run like hell” decided to blow it. The horn gave such a groan and a blast that he nearly fainted and as he stood shaking there was a terrible yell among the trees and great hounds baying. He took off running too but he couldn’t catch up with the other lads who were going hell for leather and run as he might he kept stumbling and could hear feet behind him. Once the other lads were safe indoors, they saw their friend staggering. He was nearly to the door when the pursuer stopped; they heard the twang of an arrow and the lad threw up his arms and screamed and fell flat on his face in the porch, quite dead. There was no arrow through him, and there were no hounds and no hunter. 🌳 #fawnlorn #matthayton #illustration #inktober #inktober2018 #folklore #hernethehunter https://www.instagram.com/p/Bot4aQ3AB5U/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=19x480r3xn86d
