I should have read this as soon as it came out, but it feels more appropriate that I waited until October, since the story takes place over Halloween. I’m so happy that @sarahkuhnbooks’s Heroine Complex series is continuing past the first three books, because reading them genuinely fills me with joy. I’ve said before how this is one of the best superhero comics I’m reading, except it’s in prose. I was particularly impressed at how different this one felt from the previous books, while still being perfectly consistent with what came before. This felt smaller scale, almost like a mystery that needed to be solved with the characters’ brains, rather than by punching something. (Not that they earlier ones were that basic, either, now that I type that.) I also loved that it had a clear point of view, and a story with some impact. So with this enovella, I am caught up on the earlier Heroine Complex stories by @sarahkuhnbooks. (A new novel came out the other day, but I’ll read that one pretty soon.) I don’t have a lot to say about this book that I didn’t already say about the previous volumes, but it’s nice to see the supporting characters getting a bit of the spotlight here. It’s entirely possible that my current favorite superhero series may not be in comics. I’m almost caught up on the Heroine Complex series by @sarahkuhnbooks and I’m getting everything from it that I feel like I used to get from superhero comics, but don’t any more. Strong women of color, exciting plots, great characterization, humor and suspense in equal doses…And the characters develop from book to book, and they grow and change! Add that to the list of things you won’t get from Marvel and DC superheroes. I’m glad this series is continuing, because I’m completely hooked. (I also really recommend Sarah Kuhn and Nicole Goux’s Shadow of the Batgirl graphic novel. It’s so good, it wouldn’t break my heart if a future Heroine Complex story was told in comics instead of prose. The Roy of the Rovers novels are pretty quick reads, but I love them. They allow for a deeper view of the characters’ inner lives than the graphic novels. One of my projects for 2020 is to get caught up on series that I’m reading, so it feels good to get one step closer to catching up on Heroine Complex by @sarahkuhnbooks. Despite being prose rather than comics, I feel like this series captures what I enjoy about superhero stories better than a lot of superhero comics I’ve been reading lately. I particularly liked this book’s examination of the notion of a (not really) secret identity, the psychology of that notion, and how a superhero might actually deal with the dichotomy between their “hero” self and their “real” self. I’m eager to read the next book in the series, and am glad that we’ve got more to look forward to after that. Knowing that Sarah Kuhn also writes comics, it might be fun to see a comic story with the Heroine Complex characters as well.
