oh my god dude I love creatures so much.

seriously, the only reason I don’t play it AS frequently nowadays is because the norns from my favorite of the series, Creatures 2, take like some goddamn 2-4 hours to grow up into adulthood and that’s time I no longer have. Creatures 3 is better about it, but I still love 2 the most.

But seriously, for folks who haven’t heard about this game -- it was one of the first commercial game to “code [artificial life] organisms from the genetic level upwards.” While they don’t possess what we’d consider the ability to truly be “alive,” they’re considered to have the intelligence of ants and have relatively complex genetic code capable of mutating in fascinating ways.

The company that made the game (note: they called themselves goddamn Cyberlife) worked at one point with the British Ministry of Defense (to try to teach live organisms to fly jets, apparently).

It’s a slow game, which is the only reason I’d hesitate to recommend it to people now. Because even at its fastest iteration (Creatures 3) it can still take many, many generations for cool mutations to form.

But I’d at least recommend people read the wikipedia article about it. And if you’re still curious about it, GOG sells the entire series for about $15 (though I wouldn’t recommend Creatures Village). Creatures 3 (aka Exodus) is the “easiest” to keep your suicidal children from accidentally teaching themselves to eat poison and slap bees.

Marten’s arm is shaking. It’s odd to think of him that way, of being scared or upset or even just struggling. He always seems so self possessed, so self assured in the way he does things that for Tyr, seeing him shake is something he finds difficult to comprehend. “Don’t let go!” Marten grinds out, the ground underneath him slipping as Tyr struggles to make his useless leg work, the pain of the break somewhere between ouch and oh gods damn. “Don’t, you’re going to fall-” He starts to say and Marten’s eyes narrow, his mouth flattens into a flat line and with a heavy, awful haul he pulls Tyr up further, the dislocation in his shoulder relieved by the other elf’s now painfully tight grip on his shirt. “If you give up, I’m going to kick your ass.”“Sorry, I-”“Shut the fuck up, Tyr.”It hurts, and he wants to cry but Marten pulls him up, lets him bury his face in his neck while they wait for Url to find them and it’s enough. For now.
